what are the differences between 1948 rear diff vs 1936 diff
Besides the hydraulic brakes what are the differences between a 1948 rear differential and a 1936 differential? I currently have a 1936 4.11 rear differential. The 1948 has a 3.78 gear ratio. I am contemplating a swap to improve the gear ratio.
Thanks for your input! |

The 1948 3:78 gears are 6 spine on the pinion gear with a solid driveshaft. The 1936 pinion gear is 10 spline with a hallow driveshaft. You cannot use the 6 spine gears on the 36 unless you will cut drive shaft and weld a 6 spine coupler in place. You however can use 10 spline gears on you 48 with a 6 to 10 spline coupler. Personally I think your best bet is to find 10 spine gears in the ratio you want.
One thing to be aware of is that 1932-1934 ring and pinion gears are 10 spine but shorter than 1935-1948 gears and will not work for your application. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Last edited by Bursonaw; 10-19-2020 at 10:21 PM. |

Re: what are the differences between 1948 rear diff vs 1936 diff
.
ANY Ford rear end with a 3.78 (or ANY ratio) gear set from '35 THRU 1940 complete with torque tube and drive shaft will bolt-in to your '36 chassis. The rears will all be equal in width, and the torque tubes/drive shafts are all the same dimensionally. Shouldn't be TOO difficult to find a '40 rear with a 3.78 floating-around out there. DD |

The '48 rear is wider also.

Re: what are the differences between 1948 rear diff vs 1936 diff
, The '48 differential is not a direct swap into a '36. The '48 is a longer wheel base car than the '36, therefore the torque tube is longer, additionally the '48 is 2" wider than the 36 and the brakes are hydraulic in lieu of mechanical.
The '48 axles, and axle housings will fit and work on a '36 center section, however, '37-'38 radius bars have to be used. If you want to improve the gearing to 3.78, buy a new gear set in the ratio you want and have a good mechanic install it.
