Starter rebuild or new?
The starter on my tractor (Bone stock rebuilt 1950 8BA from F1 truck) had issues with the starter stud. All the threads were gone and it wouldn't hold the nut tight. I ordered a new stud but I couldn't get the field coils out so I had to solder the bars back on without removing the field coils. I think I damaged them. Starter was working, now it seems like a short to ground.
So for $91 shipped I can buy a brand new (probably offshore?) starter from DB Electric. Or I could buy new field coils or maybe pull some from another later starter in my core pile. Any thoughts on the quality of the new starters? I would re-use my original drive. |

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
Looking a bit deeper today, it seems that field coils for this starter or the similar early FE engine starter are not available. Any idea if later 60s/Early 70s style field coils interchange? I may be forced to get a new starter.

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
Markdtn,
Get a hold of Michael Driskell at Thrid Gen Automotive in McMinnville, TN. He does component rebuilds like starters. Michael is out today picking up some inventory but will get back with you. He will have what you need to rebuild your starter. 844-327-5988 |

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
Look for an old auto electric repair shop in the city. There were a lot of Delco remy shops around here.

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
You can buy the whole FE starter for under $50 at many parts stores.

I found an early FE starter rebuilt for $41 at Advance. I may go that route if the one above falls through. The DB Electric one seems to get good reviews on here. I didn't see any posts that said bad things. Anybody have thoughts on these? $91, new, and all I have to do is add my drive to it. Last edited by markdtn; 05-01-2018 at 12:33 PM. |

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
There's a 6V starter for sale in the swap section.

Re: Starter rebuild or new?
Upon looking a little deeper, I think where I soldered on the new stud that a dab of solder was touching the armature at times shorting it out. I was going to just fix it, but I am running 12V and am worried about breaking drive springs, so I bought a rebuilt T-Bird FE starter and swapped my armature and end into that case. It had nice new brushes and was very clean inside. Now I have a starter meant to be 12V. I installed it and it works nicely. Thank you for all of your advice.
