From his post history

I'm still not convinced, I think the correct puller could have removed it.

On the positive side, something good can come of this:
That axle can be made into a Hard Luck Award Trophy.

For the life of me I cannot believe that was a result of an incorrectly fitted key. The key fitment can't be THAT critical, surely.

I'm just glad that I have invested in what I believe is a decent puller and have never had to resort to such butchery. I have the VP puller.

Mart.

Speculation here:
It looks like the key was run up the ramp too high (perhaps an extra long key?), jamming against the hub and preventing the taper from seating. With the axle-nut then torqued down against the offset hub, the key/hub taking all the force, the key then rolled over within the hub. The pics show the use of a cutoff blade everywhere on the drum and axle itself, with some bluing at a few hotspots.

I know, takes all the fun out of it, huh?

I do not believe the nut had full torque. Look at the first picture and it looks like part of the threads are worn off to less than the diameter out at the end of the axle.

I believe it is easy for any of us to feel we could have removed the drum/hub without damaging the axle--However, it seems this fellow tried quite a few methods unsuccessfully with a lot of anguish along the way--When you have had such good luck with a Wilson or VP puller it is hard to imagine a hub that you could not remove--I think I would have used a cut off wheel down the length of the key way to keep from harming the axle, releasing the grip of the taper. I would wager there are quite a few Barners that would have liked to have had a crack at this job!!!

Hi again all; I was told that the key was installed with a sharp [square] edge to the inside, and that sharp edge dug into the hub taper keyway and "locked" the hub on the axle. All those keys have one rounded end that is supposed to go inward and facing upward to prevent a 'dig in'. That is my take. The parts were at our RG#85 meeting and left on my scrap pile. That's all I know Newc

I feel sorry for the poor guy who only wanted to check his brakes. My heart goes out to him.

Now, if I find myself in the same initial situation (darn thing won't come off), what should I do so as to not ruin the axle, hub and drum?

Would this be a possible course of action? Drill a hole into the key parallel with the axle, then tap the hole and thread a small bolt into the threaded hole and somehow use one of those bearing pullers or slide hammers they use to pull out dents in sheet metal to yank the key out? would that be possible? How about drilling above the key into the hub to try and free up the jam between the key and the hub?

This must be a somewhat common happening and I'm curious what you guys have done to get the hub off without ruining expensive parts?

Use the correct hub puller, K.R. Wilson ABV-156.
