To cold to be in garage
It's a cool 15 degrees out there today, and inside the garage is even colder.
I drained the water out of the car today, changing out hoses so had to be done anyways. Think I'll stay inside the warm house the rest of today.

But when it is that cold -36, it does not matter much..... -40 F is the same as -40 C. And all I know is, the coldest I have ever been in is -8 C and that was cold enough. You guys can keep your brass monkey temps and your tornadoes and earthquakes , I will have my fine sunny beach in OZ any day. |

Re: To cold to be in garage
have the 80,000 btu heater operatin wide open and it is a comfortable 68 degrees in my shop - only 31 outside. yeh guys, i am spoiled.
Had to build a "pipe the exhaust to the outside system" today. Running and engine in a closed shop is a no-no. Had two carburetors to get tested for some club fellows. "twas a very good day". ken |

I have radiant heat under the floor in my garage. It's always 65-70 F. See Radiant Tech.com.

Re: To cold to be in garage
Back in the day, I rolled down the runway in Eielson AFB at -56F or rather I tried. the engine run up air blast froze the wheel bearing's grease. We were parked on compact snow. We slid back to the hanger and hit the bearings with 3 Herman Nelsons. Then made a rolling Take Off. throttle hit max MP at 50% of handle travel.
Happy new Year all. |

You guys are all telling lies! Global warming is here according to those in the know and we should be thankful for wind power and solar!
BTW, I’m in SoCal and it was 70 at the beach.

Back in the day at Eilson, we took a Herman Nelson inside with us so we could use it to heat the other Herman Nelsons to get them started. Blew a few prop seals.

Re: To cold to be in garage
in my area of VA it never gets quite as cold as some of the areas posted, but we have our share of 20F and lower days. When I built my garage I put 12" of insulation in the ceiling and 6" in the walls. I have a big electric wall heater next to my work bay and a propane heater that makes it warm enough to work in, but I look forward to those warmer days coming in about 3 months or so...

It warmed up here to about 43 degrees (F) today. I got out to the garage to do some tinkering. I didn't want to start any projects because it will turn cold again soon enough.

Re: To cold to be in garage
We planned our Christmas / New Year's holiday trip down south so it would be warmer than in Alaska. So far, in Texas and Oklahoma, it's been colder than at home.

It's not the Great White sharks I keep a lookout for - it's the white pointers! (topless female sunbathers, to those not accustomed to the Australian vernacular).

Re: To cold to be in garage
Coldest winter I remember since 1994. I ran a fork lift outside and I only remember the year because a guy out in LA murdered his x-wife and boyfriend the same year.
We had handlebar snot mustaches by first break at 9 am. Our eyelashes were white frost and we warmed our hands by the exhaust. The Canadians truckers said we were cry babies. I kept thinking that winter "I should have listened to my mother". I got a better job in July that year and never looked back. |

Its 27 right now, the weather guessers are predicting a high of 50, and highs in the upper 40s all week. Normal temps mid 30s high and teen lows. I'll take it!

Re: To cold to be in garage
It is 28 degrees here this morning, but will be close to 60 by the late afternoon. We took our three mile walk yesterday morning and was again 28 degrees when we started, but at the end was close to 45. Did work out in the shop and temp was about 50 degrees until ran base board heater. Wish you people would send us some moisture as we have had very little in the way of rainfall in over 120 days.

Re: To cold to be in garage
I planned on pulling the steering wheel and box out of the A this week so I could take it to the basement for a rebuild.
Mommy Nature and my wife had a different idea because it has been below 10 F every day except one that reached 17 F. That one warm day was when my wife wanted me to go shopping! |

Hey Glenn in Camino, radiant heat under your floor in Camino CA? That's like me running the air conditioner in my garage now that it's winter. Only kidding, it's a nice feature but do you really need it there?

I can remember my father working on our Willy's Station Wagon in our "unheated" garage in upstate NY.. Fort (Camp) Drum, aka Pine Camp. We lived in a village just outside the base. Cold was COLD, and snow as SNOW.. not as much now here in Delaware.! Happy New Year

Re: To cold to be in garage
You guys just made me remember another one.
My Dad was a cement mason and he swore by heated concrete floors. To me it always seemed like more work and money than it was worth until I lived in a house that had it. Wow, the feeling of lying on that floor covered with carpet while I played with my baby daughter was awesome. It was so funny to see our pets sprawled out so every square inch could absorb that heat on a cold day. The idea of lying on a heated concrete floor while working on my car makes all my arthritic bones tingle with desire. I have carpet in part of my garage, and it’s sort of weird to have to vacuum instead of sweep, but boy is it easier on my body. Just thought I’d share, Mike |

Re: To cold to be in garage
I raced in a 24 hour motorcycle ice race in 50 below once. Everything broke. Steel chains shattered. Plastic fenders broke off. 2 stroke oil came out of the bottle like a thick greasy rope. When you stopped squeezing, it sucked back up into the bottle.
We had propane tank top heaters that we had to point at each other. Otherwise, the propane got too cold to flow. Every rider lost a little flesh somewhere. If Edmonton didn't have oil, I don't think anyone would live there. |

Seems like the cold is triggering a lot of check engine lights.I've had a few people with that problem, but the guys that work on modern cars daily said they have been swamped with customers with check engine lights on.

Re: To cold to be in garage
My cousin is an Ironworker in Arizona and he told me he'd been nailed twice by scorpions. Both times they climbed up his pants leg and got him in the upper thigh. He always wondered why he didn't feel them when they were lower on his pants. I wondered that too!

Re: To cold to be in garage
Up here in the Northland when it gets to be about 0º F oil gets as thick as ketchup trying to get out of the bottle. The six volt battery in the Model A cranks the motor REALLY slow and makes a noise like "nnnooooooo" before it quits. And if your choke doesn't work you might as well go back into the house. But there are some nice things that happen too. Like at about 5º F the frozen snow squeaks under your feet as you walk out to the shop. Kinda cool. The air you breathe is so clear and clean, the sun shining on the snow is so bright it just makes you forget everything else. But you have to take care.
As your body cools down it protects itself by pulling the warm blood circulation into the body core and slowing it down in the extremities. Your ears, nose, cheeks, hands and feet get colder. If you rub those parts to get them warm again the circulation improves. I was living in Bemidji years ago and one winter evening I was out by the barn splitting oak firewood. Bare hands and jacket open, but not cold at all. There was no wind, the sky was clear and the Milky Way was in full sight plus there were Northern Lights coming up from all sides that met in a dark ring at the top. Beautiful. Peaceful. At about 11:00 pm I decided to go in and looked up at the thermometer on the barn wall. It was -20º. I had to look twice to be sure. I couldn't believe that the body could be conditioned to be comfortable at that temp but it is absolutely true! Since then I don't let the cold temps stop me from doing things. If we did that in Minnesota or Canada we would never get anything done in the winter. We might as well head south. Maybe Iowa, eh? |
