Default Where to Connect Linkage?

I have re-installed the pedals and attached the brake linkage and switch.
I have a pic of this spring and rod left to go...I believe the free end of the spring hooks to the ear at the bottom of the bell housing but I forget where the rod attaches...part of clutch? (Should have taken prior photos)
Length of rod is 7"
Might have to crawl under a friend's coupe tomorrow and see how it goes

That's not suppose to be anywhere. It's some home-made contraption to help return the brake pedal entirely.

Never came from the factory this way - with a Ford part number?
Then the 'hook' of the rod must clip around the brake pedal trunk?

The pedal return spring accessory really is a bandaid fix . If the brakes are in reasonable condition and the brake rods and cross shaft are set up correctly you will have good brakes that you never knew that you had . Here is how that I do mine. Disconnect all of the brake rods at the clevis end Adjust the brakes at each wheel untill drag is felt . Back of the adjustment untill all or just about all of the drag is removed . If the front brake levers don't lean foward about 15 degrees when the levers are pulled back , removal of the drums and the addition of brake pills or lengthening of the brake pins may be necessary . I then adjust the pedal rod so that the plunger at the rear of the pedal rod is within 1/16 of an inch from the inside rear of the center crossmember where the plunger meets the brake light switch on the 30-31 models . I then adjust the brake pedal rod clevis untill the brake pedal is at the top of its travel . I then prop the pedal up and proceed to adjust and connect the service brake rods . Adjust the brake rod clevices so that the clevis pins will just enter the brake levers with all slack removed and then you will have it !!! This will have the pedal and brake rods adjusted with all slack removed so that at the least depression of the brake pedal the brake lining will meet the brake drums to stop the wheels from turning . You will then have real brakes and the pedal will return when realeased .

Thanks Purdy! I have determined I do not need the bandaid fix after all. The braking setup works just fine without it

Red face Re: Where to Connect Linkage?

Mr. Purdy,

Hah! I use one and my brakes are fine! I like the extra "snap" they
give to the brake pedal return. Back in the day they also made one for
the clutch pedal. I like things that let me say: "And make it Snappy!".
Just like in the '30s gangster movies.

Bob , Its just an accessory , If you like it , it sure won't hurt to use it . If you've got a lot of slack in the system it will still raise the pedal but the brakes won't operate at optimum level . If you want it to be snappy , leave a little free play in the pedal rod and use the spring . The brakes can still be good . I feel that you know how it needs to be set up .
Just a thought .
Purdy .

Bob I kinda felt that it was all in jest . I replied so that you wouldn't think that I was sayin in my previous post that the return spring shouldn't be used even if a person wanted to use it . I figure that we both pretty well understand the mechanics of the model A . Happy new year!!!
