Default Need a New Coil

My A's coil failed over the weekend. I need a bit of education on what and where to buy. Does any supplier provide a better coil than the others? Is there a coil that is more reliable than the others? Is a hotter coil better? What are the pros and cons of a hotter coil? Appreciate your recommendations on what and where to buy. Thanks.

Based on information from knowledgeable people on this forum, I purchased a Pertronix 40111 1.5 ohm "Flame Thrower" coil several years ago. Very happy with it.

I've read here that many coils are oil filled. If you mount them in the stock location, upside down, they can eventually leak.

I went to buy a 6v coil at the local o'reillys and when I shook it you could hear the oil sloshing around.

I think the original coils were tar filled or something similar.

I see the Pertonix 40111 mentioned above is epoxy filled....nothing to leak out....maybe I'll get one too...

Tar or Epoxy filled is best when mounted upside down like original.

There is an oil filled version, with a similar number, considerably less expensive.

This is the epoxy filled version...

Speaking of coils I picked up a slant pole coil that would be appropriate for my early 29 tudor. After cleaning I noticed the lightening like trace on the Bakelite insulator (see pic). Should I give it a try anyway, or would I be asking for trouble?

I'd fill the crack with super glue and give it a try.

Be sure the first thing to go on each post is an insulating washer.

How did you determine that it was the coil that failed?

Can that coil be used on with 6 volt original points style ignition or only on the Pertronics unit?

They say their oil filled coil is available in both 1.5 ohm and 3.0 ohm versions, with either oil-filled coil.

What is the difference in the vibration resistant epoxy version regarding it's ohm's rating ?? And is any of this necessary in a Model A ?

Been using Flame Thrower coils on a heavy boat for years. Very robust!

I don't know if your one is OK Paul,
But a fellow drove to my house a couple weeks ago in his Canadian 29 Tudor,

It still had the Original Slant Pole coil on it and it was still working fine .

I thought a tribute to Henry and his Well Built Car

You didn't mention whether your car is 6 or 12 volts.

The pertronix 40111 is a 1.5 ohm epoxy coil. so,
6v; no resistor
12v; resistor needed

Just make coil is installed same as battery polarity.
battery + grd; + coil to points
battery - grd; - coil to points

Yes, mine is 6 volt, positive ground, original points style ignition. Quoting from Patrick L who just posted:

agreed, I have a coil with 1000 rust pit holes in it and Ive seen one way worse where the outer case had a good 1/4 of the top half rusted away still tests great and produces a nice hot blue spark on the coil tester.

If you are using a 6 volt system then a 6 or 12 volt coil will do , no resister required . But if using a 12 volt system then a resister is required.

If you have 12v, use the Pertronix 40611 3 ohm coil. No resistor needed as it has an internal resistor. It is epoxy filled.

I would go one step further and clean out the crack as it may contain material that will still allow the spark to follow the path.

Prior owner of that coil may have had a problem with it...just be aware it may fail at some point due to that crack.
