Default new starter relay, now noisy engine?

Ok went out to start my 62 ford galaxie 390.It would not turn over no clicking from the starter relay, headlights bright battery measures 12.8 volts. So I go get a cheap imported starter relay and put it in,when I put the starter cable on the engine starts cranking with the key not even in!Ok relay is stuck closed.Get another relay and this one doesn't turn over the starter till I put the key in,but when it starts the engine starts making a lot of noise ! It was rebuilt in 2009 and has not given me any problems.I hope the starter drive is maybe stuck.ANY IDEAS?

I know the starter relay didn't cause the noisy engine but I wonder if the Bendix drive didn't retract what kind of noise it would make?THE Engine was full of oil and I just drove it last week with no problems!

That's possible. You should pull the starter and have a look. If the bendix is engaged with the ring gear the starter will be difficult to remove.

I think the solenoid is not disconnecting the starter, so it continues to run and keeps the drive engaged. causing the noise. Can you not get a "good" solenoid? John

Lots of guys been having starter solenoid problems on another forum I visit. Most seem to made of inferior imports, some seem to have better luck with Napa. If you could find NOS it would be the best but pricey.

I agree with others it is likely a solenoid or bendix issue. I have several NORS solenoids. I can cross reference the part numbers with the Ford part number if you have it. While I am healing up from surgery I can not dig through the boxes yet as I can not take them down from the shelves. If you post the correct Ford part number I can look when I get healed up. Alsowould be glad to get you a list of various brand part numbers for you to look for from my Echlin parts interchange guide. After all I need something to occupy my mind. Rod
