I had simular issues... cleaning the ground at the frame and connections at battery helped.

FOLLOWUP:things went fine on our 140 mile round trip to a good BBQ, other side of the mountain. The starter behaved just fine, and sounds fine when cranking. I think it was just a fluke... A fluke is good for you once in a while; with tartar sauce and white wine.

The battery was just low 'cuz I've been driving it a half mile a day around the corner to work, mostly. It's all charged up now. Chuck

You may consider a trickle charger to bring the charge up if it's not, after a short drive. Some like them, some don't.
However, short drives like you mentioned, are also detrimental to the engine, as condensate doesn't get burned off and nasties the oil, ect.

Thanx Chuck, I do have a 6v trickle charger (often just too lazy to pull back the carpet and use it). I've had the car a year and have NO IDEA how old the battery is. My ammeter shows a charge of 10A, and I think I should adjust the generator a bit lower, and combine that with the trickle charger. Chuck

No need to connect to the battery, just lift the left hood and connect to the starter switch and ground.

Why don't you just walk 10 minutes, better for you, the car and the enviroment.

A head nut works good when connecting the charger to a ground

So it doesn't hurt 'anything' to connect the trickle charger right to the car without isolating it to the battery only?

With my 2 Amp Trickle charger, I hook the BLACK (-) to the big nut on the starter switch, the RED (+) to head bolt, easy!
By the way, 2 Amps for too long a time, WILL cook a battery!!! Tom W. uses a 24 hour timer, just to give it a SHOT, now & then. I screwed a plug in adapter in my ceiling light & plug the charger into it, then the charger ONLY runs when the light is on!
The Dog calls it, "OL' BILLS' CHEEP OAKIE INTERMITTENT BATTERY CHARGER-UPPER"
If you can find a 6 Volt "float" charger, you can leave them on indefinitely, as they only put out about 400 MILLIAMPS, (less than 1/2 Amp)
TOM W, what is a trick way we can use a Harbor Freight 12 VOLT float charger, on a 6 VOLT SYSTEM?
Cars that are driven regularly, RARELY need the battery charged! Fortunately, here, we can drive ours pretty much YEAR ROUND.
Bill W.

That's fine, you don't have to isolate the battery. BUT.....I don't like to leave any charger on an unattended battery. Once I had a 1 amp charger on a battery overnight, and during the night the battery exploded. In the morning battery acid was all over my dad's Olds, and I couldn't find any battery parts big enough to haul in for scrap.

On another occasion I had a 3 amp charger catch on fire overnight. Luckily the charger was setting on the top tank of the radiator so the fire never spread past the charger.

Now I leave the batteries alone unless they sat for a couple months and I happen to be in the garage for 15 minutes or so, then I'll connect my 6 amp charger for the time I'm in the garage.

There are trickle charges and unit made to maintain a charge. They are different. I would not keep a charger or a trickle charger hooked up without being around but I do use a deltran unit that has several automatic modes of operation.

It could be done, Katy. The hot desert Dog Days of Summer are almost over.

I have a "Battery Butler" that (I believe) is supposed to trickle and maintain, but not run all the time.

Thanx Tom,

That will make the difference with ME (lazy arse) charging with my Battery Butler or not. Raising the hood and doing it crosses my "lazy barrier" from going in and undoing the carpeting etc. You may have extended my life with "Bonnie".

BTW, the "Battery Butler" (trickle charger) DOES shut off when battery if full, and comes back on as needed. Mine is 6v, but it is sold in 12v also. Chuck
