Default Tranny for 60 hp Flatty

I’m 95% sure the 60hp & 80hp versions of the Flatty’s use the same tranny, is that correct?

I don't think so. It was a long time ago, but I had a V860 about 1960 that I wanted to build a hot rod around. It seems the transmission itself was physically smaller than that for the 85. I seem to remember that the bolt patterns were the same, and the 85 transmission could be mounted to he 60 with some modification around the starter drive.

No, the V8-60 trans is considerably smaller in size and the input shaft also is smaller.

it depends on year and use, in 1940 it was the same size as 85, in in a 4 speed truck it was same trans, but bell housing,or case would be different

For commercial applications there was a 60hp casing available that takes the normal V8 gears. I had one from a 39.

I have a V8-60 commercial trans sitting in my shop now that I was going to use behind a "hopped Up" V8-60 engine I was going to put in my '38. Car now sold.

In the US Fords, it was from 1937 to 1940. The case was always different (obvious different bellhousing) but the same length as a "big block engine" trans so they would both easily fit into the cars. The 37 to 39 had a small gear set while the 40 used a set which could fit both big and little V8s.

A normal 85 transmission will work if you grind out a simi circle on the case to match the starter bulge.

I have a 40 pick up trans. in the shop. It is a 78 case and it has both cutouts for the starters. One year only. It has stump puller gears but can take any gear setup.

Might it be a 73 case?
