Is the pitman arm 'oriented' correctly? Is it the right way around? It should go on considerably further than it is...but you know that!

I'm not sure about the older cars but the newer vehicles I've worked on have tapered splined shafts and if the pitman arm is "upside down" then the tapers aren't oriented the correct way. I've also seen where they are machined with a couple splines removed to index the pitman arm correctly. Check to make sure your tapers are matching and check to see if there's an indexing slot.

Thats what i was thinking but wanted aa second opinin i did put the steering lock in lock position but thinking about it it could be off in 4 different ways.. there is 4 larger splines that need to coincide correctly I'll just have to try alll positions til i find the right one. Thank you all for your response. Greatly appreciated!!!

Turn the wheel lock to lock and count the turns. Turn half those number of turns back and the box is about centered. Have the wheels pointing straight forward and the correct "larger spline" location will be apparent.
