Default Update on 1937 Got it started but its knocking

Got the 37 started last night finally. Changed out distributor and plug wires. Car will start right up with a shot of ether. And will run on its own but i have a bad knocking noise that sounds like it coming from the mid area Is it possible i have a stuck valve will this make a knocking symptom? What would you guys do next. It,will sit and idle but this knock worries me. Almost sounds like a bolt hitting something.

Thanks Mike

rotate the engine by hand to see if it has a hard spot. If not do a compression check. If that is good put a vacuum gauge on it.

short out plugs and see it it changes the knock----this could locate the problem cylinder
it could just be carbon trapped between the head and piston---or other debris
does it change between hot and cold ---

My 50 had a stuck intake valve when I got it, mine popped back through the carb on compression stroke, after I got it freed up it still tapped due to the damage to the lifter top. I replaced the lifter , valve and guide and all is well.

The first thing thing I would ask here is "What kind of oil pressure did you have?".

Started it up when i got home tonght. Knocking seemed less then last night. After about 30 sec it went away and car seems to be running smooth. Showing no oil pressure on sender. Smoking a bit. And smells rich. I wonder if I had a stuck valve. I am thinking i might give it a marvel mmo treatment. It has not been run in about 15 years and has been in a humid environment. Any thoughts on oil pressure could it just be the gauge??? Think I will change the oil tomorrow.

Put a mechanical gauge in place of the electric sender on the back of the block. Remove the spark plugs and crank it..... see what you get for pressure. If zero, I wouldn’t run it till you find the problem and correct it ........Mark

immediately put a remote mechanical oil pressure gauge on the engine, you will have to remove the electrical sender (hard to do with out special tool) or the plug located adjacent to it, remove the spark plugs and turn engine over and see what you have on the mechanical gauge. most of the time cranking oil pressure for these engines is in the 20/25 lb range

If I cared for the motor I would not be running it for 30 min to see if the noise went away and with no oil pressure ! Stick a mechanical gauge on it .

As said make sure you have oil pressure before doing anything else, it may be just the gauge or sending unit because it probably wouldn’t be smoking if it wasn’t oiling I don’t think.

MMO would be to just fine tune/lube the upper part of the engine.

No oil pressure and a hard knock is bad.

There is a thought I've been taught by a very smart guy (not car related).
Think, Think, DO. or... Do, Do, THINK. super simple.

Both have there advantages. In this case the earlier might be apt.
