Default 38 Ford big truck question

Working on a 1 1/2 ton with a pto drive shaft early in it's life it was a tow truck and have the parts to put it back except a hydraulic pump. Does anyone know what that pump would be.

Thanks
Sparky

the first this is " what you expect the pump to do" capacity wise. probably lots of
pumps on ebay
question is a hydralic pump on a wrecker? modern wreckers, roll backs are hydraulic
but in my day the PTO drove a gearbox for the winch & before that you cranked it.
I grew up with this hand cranked Manley wrecker through out the ealy 1950w

I can agree with that I have seen many like that when I got the truck there are hydraulic pistons on the sides of the a frame for the tow body not saying they were ever really married PO only remembers it being a tow truck not what was on it.

Sounds like somebody "modernized" the outriggers. They originally were gravity and pinned and really heavy to pick back up as well as the operator having to get down and dirty to do so.

Choosing deplacement of the pump is limited to 2 things....how patient you are waiting for things to happen, this sets the minimum...and what is the maximum power you can load the PTO with before bad things start to happen, this sets the maximum.
Is the winch hydraulic ?
The setup of the boom is not critical in speed but if you have a hydraulic winch you want it to move faster then a snail in a stone staircase...

every garbage/trash truck has a hydraulic pump, so look for a local wrecking yard for big trucks, you should have no trouble coming up with a pump and the drive shaft. I know of one old tow truck in a local yard that has forward and reverse on the pto which operates the winch and the boom true different gear boxes

Yeah not looking to start a wrecking business with a 38 want to get it back to pretty and make it a solid driver for fun and show. Want it to function but doesn't need to be really crazy. What did ford put on them on the dump truck body of the day
