Ten car museums on a single site and a grand one at that, all for one admission price. You'll not regret your visit.

I think it is the best car museum in the USA. It's truly a car collector's car museum. Also, they hosts a variety of top notch car shows and events throughout the year.

This one is a "must see" . Make sure you know how to get there as some GPS instructions will send you down some long dirt roads. This place requires at least one full day. Get there early when they open and stay until they throw you out. If at all possible, go for two days, it will be more relaxing. Car clubs use the grounds for many events even after hours. The park like setting and restored barns are good enough to visit even if you don't like cars.
My opinion

I whole hearted agree that the Gilmore Car Museum is a fantastic place to visit. These photos were taken in 2013 and since then, many new buildings have been added including the new Lincoln Motor Car Museum. There are so many things to look at you won't be disappointed.

This is the new Lincoln Motor Car Museum at Gilmores, with a display of Lincolns. The official opening was in 2014. One very classy building, and just one of the attractions at Gilmores. Definitely worth a visit.

Trevor,

Thanks for sharing your photos.

That's the Franklin Museum next to the Lincoln Museum and across the street and next to the Model A Museum is the Cadillac Museum (not shown) which opened later in 2014.

A GREAT Museum and worth the drive and visit!!!! The Model A Museum building is built like a Ford dealer from early '30's and has "parts" department and a "showroom" floor. There are also some nice V8's as well in the multi buildings of the museum grounds

We visited in 2013 and the Lincoln museum was under construction, the A museum was great. I noticed a Plaque from 1929 in the Franklin museum from the dealership that was here in Portland.

If you have time and your with the little lady, get over to Frankenmuth it's a nice break from all the car things to do when in Michigan.

I looked it up on Google Maps to see exactly where it is in Michigan. Looks like a little over 100 miles west of Dearborn/Detroit, Mi. Putting this on my list of things to do the next time I'm in the Dearborn/Detroit area, maybe during the next EFV8 Club GNM.

Mercman, thanks for posting your photos.

Conveniently located in the middle of nowhere.
The best way to get there is US131 north from Kalamazoo then M89 east from Plainwell.
Navigation systems will direct you on very interesting alternative routes.
Some buildings have heat, you will have the best experience May to October.
I have have some very cool photos I will post in coming weeks.

I have always wanted to drive the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and check out where the "Iron Mountain" plant was, plus the area is beautiful. It looks like the Gilmore Museum needs to be added to that trip! LouB.

John, I think we can manage a little side trip before or after the Grand National next year. Gilmore is approx. 130 miles from Dearborn (just over 2 hrs). And it's about 100 miles from there to the EFV8 Foundation Museum in Auburn, IN on the way home for ya too, if you're looking for another side trip. I know how you hate driving... Bryan

Hi Everyone. The only car magazine I get is Sports Car Market. Saw this is the March '17 issue that arrived this week.
Text: "The Golden Age of Sports Cars: 1949-1967" brings Nicolas Cage's 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, a Shelby Cobra 427 and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing to the Gilmore Car Museum through April 2017. All told, almost two dozen exceptional sports cars will be on display at the museum in Hickory Corners, Mi.

I've never visited, but thought I'd add this information to the thread.

EDIT: Oops, I forgot the fabulous V8 Times that I wouldn't miss reading from cover to cover.

I'm going to be in the area with my classic GMC motorhome later this year and I asked about camping in the area of the Gilmore. Got this response.

Good Morning Bill,

You can camp here on our grounds, and it is only $20

Best,

Been there a few times. LOVE LOVE LOVE the smell in the old barns, the oil and grease smells. A good friend of mine has built several of the new barns over the last few years. That they're growing is fantastic.

Has one of the few Tuckers on display.

Truth be told though, it's sensory overload after awhile. "Oh look, another million dollar Duesenberg. Yup. I'm thirsty, lets get a drink."

Here is an old interesting photo.
Motorcycle is a 1931 or 1932 Harley VL.
There are six men in the photo, three in uniform, I think all are police forceing a woman into the back seat of a phaeton.
Sun is high, check shadow on front door.
Who can id the car ?
Any idea what is going on here ?

The U.S. Office of Price Administration (OPA) rationed gasoline on May 15, 1942 on the east coast, and nationwide that December to assist in the war effort, which had caused massive shortages of gasoline.

Why would a 40 Chevrolet have a Ford banjo steering wheel with V8 logo on the horn button? Also why the Ford logo on the speedometer? I suspect it is around a 39 Ford with the windshield opening handle.

Robert, you're looking at the wrong picture. The id was requested for the car in post #52. The pic of the dash you're seeing is of the 35 Ford coupe in post # 51.

It is LAPD for sure.. notice the airvents in the service caps.. and the motor officer is wearing a crusher cap with the distinctive LAPD walking bear hat piece. Also, motor officers in this era wore green & tan uniforms.. even though they worked the same police department.. it was a holdover from when the CHP came into existence in the late 1920's.

Love that photo. As a retired LEO who had for a time rode HDs and did traffic enforcement I love to see old photos and old black and white movies, where the cops chase the bad guys with the sirens blaring on their Harleys.

Had my '40 at the Gilmore this weekend. This is one of the coolest places there is. I'm so glad I live within driving distance.

I don't see a big oil spot under that Harley. It must be out of oil!

I was there this year. Took a trip from Calif. And the Gimore was on my must see bucket list. Covered 10,000 miles on my trip. Going to show pictures at The V8 meeting. I do not think anyone in the club has been there. Some have not even heard about it. Thanks to the Ford Barn I did.

Our group visited the Gilmore Museum after attending the EFV8C/A GNM and Motor Muster at the Greenfield Village, and sure glad we did! It was well worth our time to go see this great Museum. I'll probably go back and visit again after the 2019 CNM in Auburn, IN

During the past two years, I was able to drive several Ford Model T cars during the Gilmore's Model T class. Great fun to drive these old cars. I might go again next year for a third time. I have been to the museum several times over the past few years. The best car museum around.

Earlier this year I donated my just-restored 1931 Lincoln sport phaeton to the Lincoln Motor Car Foundation Museum at the Gilmore. I can't think of a better home for it.

Talk about oil spots under Harleys!. We made up a nice black cardboard oil spot at work and put it under a new BMW motorcycle in our parking lot. Owner did a real dance around the bike till he figured it out, then took the 'spot' to his club meeting. Lots of FUN. Newc

A few more to add to DavidG's post. Had the pleasure of not only going to the Gilmore at the EFV8 Grand National this past June but seeing David's absolutely stunning and fabulously restored Lincoln, it was the the highlight of my visit to say the least.

The museum was a side trip at the Grand National Meet in Dearborn last year. I'm so glad it made the trip as it was quite an amazing place. Plan to spend at least one full day just to walk around to all of the buildings. I though the exhibits were well arranged and I learned a lot. Lots of great cars! A bit out of the way but if you like cars, it's a must see.

DavidG - What a wonderful donation you have made. I'm glad you are happy with it and now so many people will get to see your car.
