Default Brake pedal return spring

My brake pedal does not return fully....and have one of the aftermarket brackets with a spring that keeps it in place nicely. While replacing the tranny this bracket/spring was taken off...and I can't seem to figure out how it goes back on!
Anyone with a photo or other help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. Gil NoCal

Hi Gil,

After years of FAQ's, in lieu of continuing to respond to the same Model A questions all of the time, Mr. Walt Bratton added tips in his printed catalog, one of which is a diagram of installing this return spring.

Hope this helps.

Originally they were not used but have become popular to compensate for a pedal return problem

Mine did this, and when I pulled the DS rear hub, I saw why: the long spring had become jammed between the backing plate and the e-brake carrier. There is just enough space for the spring to be pulled in there. I put a new spring in, and it was OK for a while, but the problem is back. I don't know how to avoid this, and I hate to resort to bandaid fixes. Any suggestions?

THAT AIN'T NO BANDAID It's far better than your NOSEY neighbor tellin' you that your stoplights are keepin' him up at night

My 30 tudor had one of those brackets on the pedal when I got it, it didn't look right. I fixed and adjusted everything and got rid of the bracket. A year later brake pedal sticking, brake light on, dead battery. I hooked a small spring to a 28 brake clevis pin to a bracket ( where you can't see it ) No stuck pedal, no dead battery, no shade tree mechanic looking bracket.

The Mac's drawings most helpful.

So you traded one shade tree mechanic looking bracket for another...

Same with the one available from our vendors....but you do get extra credit for doing your own. That's part of the hobby for me too. Solving a problem myself rather than buying the solution.

I found that if I have no slack in the brake rods and keep all the linkage lubed, the problem is solved. However I replaced the brake light switch with a new one from a 1968 Camaro. This might have helped as well. Install a kill switch, I shut everything down every night.
