a few painting suggestions please
I am in the process of repainting my 31 closed cab pickup. I have it primed and ready. I plan to paint it rubalite red with the narrow bead/stripe running around the hood and cabin tacoma cream. My question, is it best to paint the stripe first, mask it and paint over everything with the red, or do you usually paint everything red, mask then paint the stripe. I will probably be using a base coat/clear coat. I would paint both colors then shoot everything with clear. I hope to get a few warm days so that I can complete this part of the project.
Thanks Bill |

Re: a few painting suggestions please
Paint the red, then the stripe. That way you dont have to buy very much stripe color. Buy good quality tape for taping off the stripe. If you dont the edges tend to lift up, causing a rippled edge. We usually use a fine line (1/16) inch tape line to get the edges nice and strait. Then come back and over lap the fine line about half way with a wider tape. The fine line is easier to pull and manipulate to get it right where you want it to go.

Or find a good striper, which gives you a more authentic and correct result. I had my tudor striped for $60.

Re: a few painting suggestions please
i'd prolly use 5% base coat activator in the first color whatever it is gonna be
clarification assuming you shoot 2 coats of base, i'd prolly use 5% base coat activator (BCA) in both coats in the color you choose to shoot first you are never wrong to add BCA . Some base coat products/certain colors require it; your supplier will know. Your taping will be more successful if you use it and if this is just a pinstripe, and not a beltline ( I am not sure which from the posting) then just pinstripe over the buffed out clearcoat

Re: a few painting suggestions please
Thanks
It is the belt line that I plan to paint over the red base, about 1/2 or 3/4 in wide. I'm going out shortly to pick up the paint, it'll be Nason base coat clear coat system. I'm pretty sure I used a base coat activator on my last project. I bookmarked the pin striping tape, looks like a great idea! Bill |

Re: a few painting suggestions please
also be sure to get the good quality masking tape; the standard off the shelf yellow roll can leave a residue and be hard to completely remove, but if you have painted before you prolly know this
