Default Side Anti Rattle bumper on a 34 Rumble lid

I understand that at the top of the channel that the rumble lid sits in there is a an anti side rattle bumper. Does anyone have a pic of this. None of the early part suppliers seem to have it although they do stock the top dome rubber stop and the bottom square rubber stop.

Rather than a bumper it is a wedged-shaped rectangular piece of aluminum or zinc die casting that prevents side-to-side movement of the lid. They're at the top with rumble lids and at the bottom with deck lids and often long gone. The originals in the photo below are for '32s, but the '33-'34 versions are basically the same. The rumble lid version is on the left in the photo.

As you will surmise from the wear on the one shown, these are hard on the paint on the outside upper corner of the rumble lid when in use.

send me an email address and I will send you a pic. Not sure what David means by wear on outside. There is no outside contact on mine and been there since I bought it in 1952.

As I am sure Steve will attest, judging from the mark on the wedge, they do interact with the outside surface of the edge of the rumble lid. That's their intended purpose, namely to prevent side-to-side movement of the lid in its closed position. Otherwise they would serve no purpose.

Your right, I removed mine 20 years ago and have no problems with side to side movement, replaced rain gutter rubber with a "U" type and that keeps it form side to side movement.

Yes David you are correct the rub mark on the wedge in my photo is the outside surface of the edge of my rumble lid touching the wedge and the other wedge has exactly the same mark.

I believe the rumble seat weatherstripping goes on the actual lid itself not in the gutter. That would defeat the purpose of the surrounding gutter. And I believe they work as guides to align the latching hardware instead of rattles prevention. The weatherstriping and draw tight latching prevents that. IMHO

your right, however I have my rumble seat flooring carpeted and can't have water drain in, so "U" weather stripping channel works great and no problem latch with in cab handle. Rear window drains thru fender well but could not figure away to drain rumble channels since original drained on floor.

With respect, the channels drain into the same general area as the entirety of the back edge of the rumble lid so adding weatherstripping to the channel does nothing to stop the primary source of water intrusion, i.e. the opening at the back of the rumble lid. What is stopping water intrusion forward of the bottom cushion is the retainer for the back of the rumble seat bottom cushion which serves as a dam to contain the water so that it will drain out the holes in the rear of the floor pan. That formed sheet metal retainer/dam is often missing if any repair work has been done of the floor in that area.

Here is a picture of the sheet metal retainer/dam which contains the water and drains out the holes in the rear of the floor pan. Unfortunately you cant see the drain holes in the picture but they are there.

Steve,

Thanks for the photo.

stangblu,

Doesn't centering the lid prevent it from moving from side to side by wedging it with the tapers? I think so given that at least one side will be pressed up against the side wedges, if not both sides. Further the width of the latching surface on the latch catch (on both the roadster and the cabriolet/coupe versions) is well in excess of the width of the latch tongues, which suggests the designers of those parts foresaw that achieving dead center 100% of the time was unlikely and providing for variations was a necessity?
