Default Flathead On Engine Stand

Does the exhaust type stand adapter and its bolts safely support the weight of a full dressed flathead? Anybody have problems with this set up?

Yes, that's probably the best way . The entire engine can be built except for the one exhaust manifold.

Yes, that is the best approach. On a 58ba it is not really an issue, but on the earlier blocks with the integral half bellhousing it is.

An 8BA can hold the full weight of complete engine using bellhousing.
Do not use a 3 legged engine stand. It must have have 4 casters. I removed
some parts to do some work on it Full engine was there at the start.

Lack of stability. It's so easy for the engine stand to fall over if it hits a bump, nut, bolt, screw or anything else when trying to roll it along the floor or driveway. Especially so if the casters are small dia. Three legs just don't provide safe stability. Kind of like a 3 legged milking stool. Found out the hard way many years ago.

The three leg stand issue is not specific to flatheads, any engine is unstable when using them.

Is that a photo of the ultra-rare special distributor for right hand drive 'down under' cars??

Speaking of Flatty engine stands; it seems to be getting very hard to find someone that makes these adapters or the "cradle like" brackets for flatheads, the one vendor "stumpy's fab works" seems to be non responsive and vern tardell seems to be out of them too, anyone know of vendors that make the side adapters or stands?

That's all I have is 3 legged ones. Never had an issue before with up to a Ford 460 on them. That's probably double what a flathead weighs.

Some of us here have welded a piece of angle iron about 20" long onto the plate that comes with the engine stand. The 'legs' of the angle are welded to the plate so the 45 degree face is where you bolt the engine. I just set an exhaust manifold on the angle before welding and drilled through the holes. No machine work, no math. It's great that these V8s are built at a 45 degree angle. If you don't weld, I bet a local shop would do it for a very small fee if you had the metal drilled, paint sanded off etc. I checked into the adapters and 65 bucks or so.

Yes, that is the ultra, ultra rare 8BA prototype engine. It is the only one made by "misprinting" the negative. I never noticed that photo error before after all these years. I still have the engine but, now it's "normal". Thanks for noticing.

Are you old enough to remember the old guy on a tricycle on Rowan and Martin's 'Laugh in'?

The much aligned Harbor Freight sells a motor stand that works very well. It is reasonable price, probably china made.( I gave up not buying made China stuff ) It has 2 wide legs and 2 not so wide ones in front. I made a exhaust attachment for it but used to hang 35-36 blocks by the bell housing with no problem. Even hauled a couple to the rebuilder 20 miles over not so smooth road.

Regarding the side mount adaptors, Specialty Ford in Rosemead, California has them. 626 288 2121.

Yup. I hung a complete 354 HEMI on one HF stand. Supported the front of the engine
with two 2 x4's and a 2x6 straddling the legs just to be safe. I know it's not a flatty but, one must admit it's pretty.
