Transmission Reassembly
How hard is it to put a transmission back together to the bellhousing with the throw out bearing and replace the clutch disk? Then put it back in the car and then the rear end all for someone eho has never done it before.

As someone who was in your shoes a couple months ago the short answer is not that hard.
I didn't touch the clutch since it's basically new but I did do everything else. I reinstalled mine by myself and heaved it in through the passenger door. Everything slid together without much fighting and then I realized I forgot the throwout bearing... the second time was much harder. Guess I only had enough steam for one run through. To get the rear end back in place I used a jack under the banjo and a jack under the radius rod to torque tube attachment point. A couple times adjusting the jacks and shuffling things around and everything went right together. |

I am having trouble getting the throwout bearing off of the hub. It almost seems like it is one piece. Could you use a multidisk throwout on a single disk trans?

Use a ratchet strap around the trans hooked around the dash to cradle the assembly.
a couple of 3/8 -18 bolts with heads cut off screwed in engine side will acts like down pins. about 2.5 to 3" long on bolts. Bob |

In answer to your question about the Bearing being the same: NO that whole system is/was different, including the gear box..

Update: i tried to put the new bearing on the hub and it went on with absolutely no resistance, which I am going to take a wild guess here and say that means I need a new hub?

The only point of contention might be the long bearing Vs the short bearing. Asides from that it's pretty straight forward. Not rocket science! There is a video on youtube and the guy shows you exactly how to do it. He has a clever mounting method. He drills a tight hole in a piece of 2X and works a (I think) a 3/4 nipple into the wood. Then using the open drain plug ,then he screws the trans case down it. It's stable and a nice assy. rig and very simple to make. Good luck with it!

The face of the bearing that contacts the pressure plate faces out, so you press against that face to get it on the hub. I have used Loctite 609 retaining compound on a couple loose generator bearings with good success. It takes a LOT of heat to break it down. I wouldn't worry about that.

Something is wrong. Should be a light press fit. Merits further investigation. Hub or bearing would seem to be out of spec.

I am going to try a trick with the old hub but I also have a new one coming. Another problem I have noticed is that the clutch release shaft is oversized a tad to where I cannot fit the release arm on (original or repro). About 2/5 too big. Does it have to be drilled out?

I think I saw that video, it was well made and made overhauling transmission easy, hard part was paying for all the parts.

Turns out I had the bearing on the wrong way thanks to the help of a friend! But my new problem is that the clutch release shaft is oversized a tad to where I cannot fit the release arm on. About 2/5 too big. I already put the fork on because I did not think of this and now I think the whole shaft has to come off to be thrown into a lathe. Thoughts?

Is the shaft oversize or you just think it is? 2/5 too big is a lot. Post a few photos so we can get an idea of the problem.

After more thought and looking at it, I think it may be a combination between the shaft being a tad oversized (probably closer to 1/5) and ghe new clutch arm being a tad too small.

Having a friend turn the shaft down a little in a lathe and ream the arm out a tad and hopefully that will do the trick and we can put it together. For now I have to go buy a new clutch arm as my other one I bought got destroyed in the process of getting it off!

Transmission is all back in the car now thanks to another guy in the club. It runs much quiter and the clutch is much easier to depress with the new arm. No more transmission leaks either with the new gaskets and me unclogging the vent hole in the tower.I am glad the whole experience is over and the car is back on the road for the rest of the driving season. Next project for winter is redoing the AR braking system.
