just finished installing my rear main seal and am getting ready to install the oil pan. I have used HI-TACK on the gasket to pan...the question is should I use HI-TACK on the pan gasket to the block ????
What do you think ?

if you put it on block you will have an almost impossible time removing pan at a later time.just do not over tighten bolts when installing

I like to glue the gasket to the pan, then spray with WD40 so it will release. Its easy to carry a pan or a rocker cover to the bench to clean.

I glue to the pan and put a light coat of grease on the gasket side. As said if you glue both sides have fun ever pullng the pan off.

I would NOT glue the gasket to the engine block, only glue the gasket to pan. Don't want to take the chance of bending the mounting flange of the pan with a screwdriver when trying to remove the pan next time!

why glue it on either side it,s a thick gasket & IT IS ONLY SUBJECT TO SPLASH NOT PRESSURE a little grease to hold it in place is all that is needed

Because, if you glue the gasket to the pan it can't shift out of place if you bump something. With grease the gasket can shift if you bump something.
If your talking about with the engine out of the car, that's a different story.

To prevent the gasket from shifting during install, tie some thin string in about four holes to hold it in place.

I ended up using a light coating of Hi-tack on the seal side to block to hold it in place while I installed the bolts which I coated liberally with Hi-tack. Generally with Hi-tack one would use the sealer on the gasket and the pan, let it set for one minute and put them together but coating just one side gave me more working time to get the pan in place. I gently tightened down the bolts figuring I could always go back and tighten them again it there were drips from the pan..no drips from the pan.
I hand tightened them flush and then did about a 1/4" turn with the socket wrench.
