Rear brake drum hub difference
I am pulling the brake drums and backing plates off to send out for a rebuild and new drums. So I see that there is a difference in the hubs that will be reused,I don't know if one is early late a replacement or what.My puller workd on both of them and no one will ever see or know the difference but me but should I look for a different one to send? The rear axle looks to be in very good original condition as far as bearing surface goes and I think it all may be original and never rebuilt but for some reason somebody decided to use different drums.

Re: Rear brake drum hub difference
I could be wrong but I think the one on the right, with the "protruding" or "shoulder" design, is a very early hub, and the grooved one is a later hub.
No way to know which is a replacement for what – someone might have bought a used early hub and stuck it on. I don't think there are any functional differences in the design. Randy will be able to assess the condition of both and make recommendations. |

Re: Rear brake drum hub difference
The hub on the left is for 1930-31 vehicles
The hub on the right is 1928-29 vehicles They are interchangeable. If this job was sent to us to put our new cast iron drums on these hubs, then we would have contacted the person who sent them and ask what year vehicle they had and we would swap one of our year appropriate hubs in replacement at no charge unless the hub was bad. We do this all of the time. This way if you need to pull your drums / hubs off, then you need only one type of hub puller. |

The parking brake band spring on the lower bracket is in the wrong hole.
It should be in the outside hole, as the upper spring is. |

Re: Rear brake drum hub difference
On the last rear backing plates I took apart, there was a split pin going through both of those holes and the spring was hooked on it. That is, it was in neither the inner nor the outer holes! It was all working as it should so I left it that way.

Re: Rear brake drum hub difference
I had not looked at both pictures when I replied previously. Now that
I have looked at the second picture, not only is one of the E band springs in the lower portion of the picture in the wrong hole as Tom W mentioned, but the springs are also the wrong ones. The springs in the picture are the return springs for the service brake. They have much more tension then the E band springs and are larger in diameter. Another observation is the pin that connects the arm to the C link is the wrong one. It needs to be shorter. The one in the picture protrudes and will make contact to the hub. Each E brake set-up has 3 long pins and one short pin. The short one is missing and needs to be replaced. Remember that all cotter pins are located on the inner side of the linkage as shown in the picture. |

Re: Rear brake drum hub difference
Well nothing much has surprised me on this car since I bought it a year ago.Only thing I would say is if I bought a better Model A roadster I wouldn't have learned as much or had asked so many questions on Fordbarn. If I knew what I was doing 13 months ago I would have never bought this car but that is the problem I see with a Model A Ford over what I was comfortable with for almost 50 years, the Early V8 Fords. With a Model A purchase there always seems to be a better one for less money week after week.
