Default Engine with two stars

We just brought home an engine to play with. When we looked at the engine number, A2406873, we noticed a star before the numbers and a star after the numbers. Is this normal?

Most have the stars to designate beginning and end of the ID number. Like anything Ford there are exceptions and outright mistakes but they generally always have them.

The stars were there at each end to keep people from adding numbers to change the serial number.
