Default Original Quail Cap Value

How much is an original 30-31 Stanco Quail Cap worth in good condition? I know there were other threads on the topic of original vs. repro quail caps, but value wasnt really established. Also, are there old reproductions that have "stanco" on them or only the originals? A friend has a very nice original that I would like to buy, but I would like to know the value is and what to look for if it were a reproduction. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

As I recall, a Jarvis (EC w/ original carton) went for over $2200 on EBay about a year ago.

And the repops are about $85.

At 35 feet they both look the same price - whatever it is.

Hey, don't look at me - I drive a TRUCK. My idea of a classy radiator ornament is a brass faucet. (Yes, I've seen the pix.)

Edit: Sorry I want to apologize. Cheap shot here. Value is where the perceptive find it. What is of value to me (faucet) is common bathroom appliance to others.

$2200!! Thats crazy! But thats NOS. Ive heard people saying theyve bought one for $500.00 and some others saying they paid a little over $100.00. This is why I am asking for a value, as I don't have any good comparisons.

Why don't you ask your friend how much he wants for it. If YOU think the price is reasonable, and you can afford it, then buy it.

And that's Ebay - need I say more?

Maybe more a desire to make sure your friend is not taken advantage of? Or even the reverse?

Fairness has a non-financial reward later.

A very nice bird not more then $650.00 [no cracks , broken parts or pitting].The ONE PROBLEM IS THE BASE...the pot metal tabs on each side of the brass tabs... Most are broken off at some point or very weak [the worst part of the whole thing.] to replate is another story.... $450.00 you will not get hurt if all is good.

Thanks Pete! I will be sure to take a close look at the base. Fred has advised me about the base as well. I will make sure those tabs are still intact. It would sure be nice to get a nice original for my deluxe phaeton. Someone stole the bird off of the cap on my car at some point and left just the base on the radiator.

I have sold several in the last couple years in the $500-$1000 range. Nice unbroken unrestored originals. If bought in the $500 range now, they are a good investment as i see them in the $1000-1500 range in the next couple years.

Alex if you tell me your friend's name & location who has the bird...I'll tell you what it sold for.

About a year or two ago a good original one (30-31) went for around a $100 or so on eBay. It was mislabled and only called a "bird ornament". I was going to bid on it but miss judged the time and lost it. It did not really
get that many bidders, I was surprised and figured it would go for big bucks.

This is a cap I bought at Hershey last year for $265. It is way to nice to spend $400 to $500 to replate and take a chance on breaking it. Take your time, they're still out there. If you're going to drive it, put on a repro.

Outstanding buy...My first one was $300 and the second one $400. The die-cast metal is very fragile making the tang below the wing tips that fits through the cap top and was peened over...very very fragile. One of mine did break and we used a serious metal adhesive to reconnect it, With the help of a fine machinist, I tried everything else and decided to use the glue, and not mount the cap for driving.

Good luck.
