Default Paint advice (for protection of panels)

Can someone tell me what type of material I can use between painted panels, so that I can protect the paint when I go to attach the panels together? I'm not talking about the type of welting with the bead. I would like something that cannot be seen. Thank you, in advance.

Clear Scotch tape, have used it many times.
And sometimes even electrical tape.
