Default ID multiplate or single plate clutch

Is there an easy way to tell if a car has a multiplate or single plate clutch before taking the vehicle to pieces??

Removing the clutch inspextion cover below the floor board would be one.

The only "external" hint, of a multi-disc clutch would be if this is an early car? If so, they used different clutch and brake pedals with a smaller diameter pedal shaft. That, and does it have a left hand parking brake? The multi-disc clutch was only used in the early 28 cars.
Hope this helps. Jeff

Multi disc clutches have a different inspection plate on them than single disc cars. The plate is a little smaller and has no louvers on it. I believe it also has non-slotted holes for the retaining screws, unlike the later single disc inspection covers with open slots for the retaining screws. I tried to find a picture of on, but couldn't.

Yep! to both..
The dead give-away is the inspection cover and the side were the pedal shaft
is. The pedal stop for the brake area is different.

I'll see if I can come up with some photos..

'Get Out & Crawl Under '........

The multi-disc clutch shaft arm is longer than a single disc arm.

Some have used the longer arm for more leverage on a single disc clutch.

my Nov. 28 coupe has a multi-disk clutch. It is an original, low mile never dis-assembled vehicle. The Judging Standards state that Nov. 28 was the changeover period to the single disk clutch.

Your picture shows the multiplate inspection cover and bellhousing. Also, in addition to what Jim mentioned about the longer arm, the brake and clutch 3/4" shaft is smaller diameter on the multiplate.

The inspection cover is wider than tall on the multiple, and it's taller than wide on the single plate. The AA cover is square.
