Will b interesting 2 follow. Ur Flatty has bellhusing cast on engine as all pre ‘49’s do, Ur pic’s made me think I might be able to mount my 8BA w use mounted bell to bolt to my indexing engine stand, thoughts? I’m not removing my crank so see no reason to remove bell housing, FW, clutch or PP?

Your engine appears to be a garden variety '33-'34, judging from the photos, with '32 heads. I can't tell well from the lack of light on the lower part of the engine, but I am curious about your oil pan. Could you please take a photo of the where the oil dipstick inserts into the pan on the left side of the engine and also a closeup of the lower part of the front of the engine on either side of the timing gear cover?

Thanks.

I don't think you really want to bolt an 8BA to a regular engine stand with the BOLT-ON half bell still attached. That's too much weight and leverage hanging-off of that stand only SUPPORTED ON ONE END. That Clayborne stand supports BOTH ends. The pic below shows what can happen when an earlier engine is bolted to the stand at the rear end ONLY...and the bellhousing BREAKS under the weight. Do yourself a favor, unbolt the bolt-on half bell from your 8BA, and bolt the block to the stand like you would a Chevy, for instance. That's perfectly safe! DD

Another one that the bell broke and ended-up on the ground.

Good luck. Always nice to see flatheads getting another chance to run again.

A typical 8BA bolt-on bell housing is made of stamped/drawn steel. I've seen the ones that take a typical early Ford transmission as well as the ones for the later 3-speeds (like modern transmissions).

Did they make a 1/2 cast iron version that I'm not aware of? If so, I would not mount it on a regular engine stand.

I would mount an 8BA on a regular stand without the bell housing attached - just like any modern engine.

Yes, the trucks with 11" is a cast iron version.

Here are the two of them....cast iron LEFT, stamped-steel on RIGHT. The stamped-steel ones only came on '49-early '51 Mercurys. DD

"V8COOPMAN" - Do you know if the cast iron and stamped steel bellhousings use the same starter plate?

I'm pretty sure no. Same angle, but not the same exact plate. The starter plate in the picture is for a truck.

I do not think the stamped steel starter plate has the large dimple in the center like a truck one does.

Now that I think about it, doesn't the Merc plate have a reinforcing bracket with three bolt holes in it that goes to the oil pan? Other than that, are they functionally the same?

I ask because I have a few of these sitting in a pile and one of these days I want to get them sorted out and properly paired up (various post-48 bellhousings and starter plates).

I believe V8 Bob noted some time back that the plate in this picture does not belong with those half bells.

You are correct Denny...the Merc has (I believe) two extra holes to bolt to the pan bracket. The pan bracket bolts to the pan via THREE studs. DD

Engine #1

This is the engine i took in to get rebuilt in the blue stand. My dad says he remembers something happening to it where he needed the heads off. It looks to me that two valves are either bent of cocked in there somehow? Not sure why this would happen or what might be wrong. He said he broke a stud. I did see that there is one stud broke. This is the engine that was in the car. I know its not a 32' block. I was hoping that this engine would be good enough to rebuild. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Engine #2

This is the engine in the red stand and the engine is blue. This he says was an excellent candidate for a rebuild. Looks like a 36' ish block due to the part number on the oil seal?
