Noisy Hood Hooks
I'm sure many of us work hard trying to eliminate the unnecessary noises in our Model A's. Any car is more pleasurable to drive when it doesn't squeak and rattle. There has been an annoying sound in my Victoria which I think I have traced to the hood hooks. The noise has gone away when I dripped some 600W in the top of the hood hook but it comes back after 10-20 miles. Has anyone used some other lubricant to silence this squeak? Ed

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
I put a plastic cap on the latch part. I think they were from wire shelving.

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
I used 3/4" pieces of vacuum hose. Nice and quite and paint is not marred. Think I got that idea from someone else on this site.

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
Mac’s and Snyder’s sell small rubber tips to slide over the hook ends. Stops rattles and paint damage.

Thanks for the post. This is the first time I’ve heard of such a product. This seems a bit different from the earlier posted links. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...earchByKeyword Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
I posted a link to the bumpers that mount on the hood in reply to the post talking about them not being available in post 5 that have been edited.
Re the hood hold down; make them out of black vacuum line tubing. Sure the end would not be closed but would do the job.

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
I use a short piece of appropriate diameter PVC tubing, Durable and works well.

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
I dipped the handles in black Plasti-Dip. Should have dipped the whole end!

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
if you look at original hood hooks, they had a well-formed little finger that fit nicely into the hood latch. unless more recent repros have changed, repros I have merely have like a small rolled tube in lieu thereof. my repros don't fit as precisely as originals.

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
Hood latch handle bumpers. They go over latch handle to keep it away from hood.
I know C. W. Moss has them. In the past I have also purchased from Mac’s. If you install all the required bumpers and the roping between body/grill and hood, should be quite. |

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
The bumpers are mounted on the hood and would have come on the car original. Link posted in my post on page 1.
The latch tip protectors (caps) are an after market item; https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...earchByKeyword Also don't forget the pads under the latches; https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...S-2-HOLE-BLACK

Re: Noisy Hood Hooks
Thank you for your comments but I did have the plastic tips on the hook. I think these squeaks are coming from inside the barrel of the hood hooks, the spring and internal shaft. You can pull on the hood hook and hear nasty sounds coming from the parts rubbing inside. As I mentioned before I dripped 600W down inside the hook but it doesn't fix the problem for very long. Ford must have had complaints about these because the hood hooks for 1932 were much nicer. Ed
