Default Axel housing wheel bearing surface

Does anyone know of a shop in the Philadelphia PA area that can machine the rear wheel bearing surface on a '40 axel housing in preparation to install a repair sleeve? Any overall advice for doing this job? Thank you, Steve.

I had this job done on a Lincoln several yeas ago in Palmyra, NJ. Don't remember the name of the shop, but it was about 2 blocks from route 73 and about 2 blocks from the Main St. along the railroad tracks.

I'm lucky enough to have a shop with a crankgrinder and this is how I did mine.
Notice the radius to add strength. Perhaps you can find a local shop or I am in Northern NJ.

Hot Rod Works is another possible source: http://www.hotrodworks.com/technical...n/labor-rates/

I really like this approach - what I'd consider the best possible way. As I need to have a couple done, will have my crank grinder use the same method!

Be sure you get a hard sleeve, they had a few soft ones out there in the past.

I had this problem, and I live in Texas. The trick is finding an old school machine shop with a lathe big enough for the axle bell to turn. I called so many machine shops and they weren't even sure they could do it, and if they could they would charge hundreds.

I finally found an old school machine shop in Arlington Texas, staff by a bunch of old timers and really old equipment. They machined the housings and pressed on the new races for $100.

Ask the old fellas in the neighborhood they should know where the good machine shops are.

Check with the local Model A club to see who they use. The crankshaft grinder is the way to go.
