Default Has Anyone Ever Seen a Model "A" With Cowl Lights on the Fender?

I think puttimg the accessory lights on the fenders might have been popular in Europe, but I've never seen a photo of a car in the States with those lights anywhere except on the cowl.

One got sold on BaT earlier this year. Everyone suspected it was a RHD Argentine model converted to LHD.

Fender Lamps where required in England and some South American countries.

A rare accessory in the US.

The back cover of the latest Model A News has an old ad for accessories. Fender mounted and cowl mounted parking lights are shown. Cowl lights were $7.00 and the fender lights were $4.50.

Can you imagine getting a Sportlite for $15... installed?

Not such a great deal when you consider that $15 was probably almost a weeks wages at that time.

I think a perfectly restored Sportlite plus paying someone to install it is still probably close to a weeks wages for the average person today.

They were common here in Australia. As a side note, in Victoria Australia, the rear light had to be switchable from the outside of the vehicle, so there were also A's with a switch mounted on the rear mudguard (fender).

That was done so that the driver knew the light was on - that the globe wasn't blown.

The average wage in 1930 was $26.30 a week.
The spotlight would have been about half a weeks wage.
In comparison, in today's money the light would cost $249.65
Average wage today is $1,028.65 weekly.
Not sure what value all this has but the light was expensive in 1930 and probably why we don't see a lot of them today.

We have a member in our club that have them on his 29 town sedan. It was built LH drive. Previous owner installed them years ago. They have fluted lens.

And you will pay $700+ for a restored Sportlite today and have to install it yourself...

Like others have said these were standard equipment for a lot of countries outside of the US in order to meet local laws.

Sharp dressed young man next to a '28 or '29 Tudor (RHD).

Ford illustration of a '30 Cabriolet that is RHD and features the fender lights.

Interestingly, that $15 light in pre-Depression 1928-29 would equal about $240 now - by 1931, it would equal about $280 now.

If you find one for $240, grab it for me, OK?
