Default Carpet for 1953 Mercury Covertible

Looking for a recommendation of a company, to get new carpets for my 1953 Mercury Convertible. I want it to be as close to the original as possible, to include the edges bound and the hump over the automatic transmission having the correct vinyl pieces, covering the seams. The color will be Black.

Thank you,

While there may be some one else, Auto Custom Carpets is one source. I don't know if they have the Merc carpets that meet your specs. Bill Hirsch in Newark, NJ sells carpet material, don't know if the sell completed carpets. Worth a phone call.

The original 53 Merc I am most familiar with is blue with dark blue carpets. No vinyl as I recall but it has a blue rubbery heal pad for the heal of the accelerator foot and where the drivers feet would normally set.

Auto Custom Carpets would be the best bet. I think you can buy their carpets through Summit Racing and would be free shipping. Another option could be Cartouche.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Auto Custom Carpets and unfortunately they sell the carpet set for a 2 door but not the convertible.

I also tried Cartouche and they only had it in loop not cut pile. Their price was almost double.

Stockinteriors.com, does have the carpet set for the 1953 Mercury convertible. Price is comparable with Auto Custom Carpets. Has any one used this company?

No one could answer that question, only that they don't fit convertibles. Learn something new every day.

The only thing i can think of is that the B pillar may be wider which would make the rug narrower from side to side in front of the rear seat.

Thanks for the heads up. The carpet set is from their 42-60 Mercury Full Size Cars (1942-1960) carpet. So it appears that they are made up per the information provided by the customer when they order. Never thought this was going to be a major issue. All I can figure is that they don't get too many order for 1953 Mercury convertibles so it is not premade and stocked.

Please be careful when selecting the carpet color. We have many color options to choose from, and some shades are very similar. Do not rely on the name of your existing carpet to match a color we offer. The color of the samples below may vary, depending on the calibration of your monitor. If you are not 100% certain of the correct color, please allow us to send you samples by clicking here.

Select Material: Plush Cut Pile
Select Color:801-Black

Please give us some information about your vehicle below. In order to correctly make your cut and sewn carpet, we need the following information. If you select "Other", please supply the correct information in the detail line.

Vehicle Year:1953
Door Count:2
Body Style:Convertible
Transmission:Auto on Column
Seats:Bench Seats
Model Details:Mercury Monterey
Comments:Cut and sewn not molded, edges bound

Due to the current Covid-19 situation this item may have a slight delay in production. This item will begin production right away and ship when complete. Production will take 7-10 business days in most cases.

They said it will take 3 1/2 weeks. It will be interesting to see what I get. Unfortunately all the rest just said no, so in the meantime, I will keep my fingers crossed. The original carpet for this car has long since been lost, before I purchased it, so using it for a pattern was never an option. I am still wondering what the difference is in carpeting between a 2 door hard top and a convertible. That might just be one of those mystery's of life!

It would be easier to have one custom made by a local trimmer. It may not be original but then there really aren't any originals available anyway. If SMS doesn't have a carpet material that's appropriate, I just keep looking till I find some. Choices are fewer since LB became part of SMS.

Obviously, you have a lot more options in Texas than we have here in Colorado. The realization is that the longer we go, the harder it will get to buy parts for our cars, and I have a late model (53')! Mine is not a show car, but rather a really nice driver, so it should't be that hard. It does make you wonder who will be left, once this is all over. Talking with my interior guy, (who told me that my car should be able to be started, for a whole new correct leather interior and new correct top, next week. I have been waiting since January, since he does it out of the shop, beautiful steel building, he built at his house). He mentioned that almost 80% of the local interior guys have now closed, and COVID-19 didn't help the matter.

It's hard to compete in the trim business here in San Antonio since I'm too close to Mexico but I have my own machine to do my own work when I need to. There are multiple ways to make a flat carpet work in a non-flat car. The trimmers generally know how to do the hump and make it look very nice. If they have to put an edge around it, it can be time consuming and time is money. If it can be fit under the sill & cowl trim panels then it's easier.

I have to admit, I have thought about buying a Juki machine ( they are on Craigs list all the time) many times, but figured the learning curve was way too steep, at this point in my life.

Update:

I did order the carpet set from Stockinteriors.com. They came in late last week, so it was a little over a week from order to arrival.

The quality and finish is great. I did a test fit and there were no issues. I will install the dimer switch and accelerator pedal grommets during final installation.

The car is waiting to go the the interior shop for a new interior and top so I will wait for the final installation until it comes back, no reason to risk it.
