Default Fender protective undercoating?

Hello,

Finally, after two years of off-and-on work, I have both front fenders painted and ready to install. I painted the undersides with the same frightfully expensive PPG paint that I used on the tops, but now I am starting to dread the chips and dings that the undersides will certainly get once I mount them on the car and start driving around.

Can anybody suggest some sort of protective coating that I could apply, that I could remove without messing up the nice paint, if I ever want the car to be 100% correct?

How do owners of fine-point cars deal with the risk of stone chips on their fenders?

Thanks,
Doug

Ever hear the expression, "Trailer Queens?" If not mistaken, that explains the high point cars life. Not all, but sure as you drive the road there will be a rock, sand or something that will fly off your tire and make you unhappy with the outcome. I have seen cars with a bumpy undercoating that seems to make most of the bad stuff bounce back off, but it goes on just like any other coat of finish and won't come off easily. You sure did a nice job of the painting, I do hope someone has a better answer than I.

super nice looking fenders - I have seen bedliner used on the under side o ffenders for protection but this will not meet your need to retain the expensive finish. My gola is to have reliable driver and driving produces nicks, etc.

How about Plasti- dip spray on? My son used it on the rims or his modern car and if they get scuffed or he wants to change the color, he just peels it off and sprays it again.

the best stuff I have found is rino bed liner, but I think any other bed liner will be just as good, it doesn't have to come off to work on fenders, I use the stud gun to work on my fenders, it doesn't bother the studs when welding them on

X-2 you could use for a bra front of fenders, it just peels off! I have not used a friend put it on his escort with no harm to the paint

They make clear tape designed to protect cars from rock chips. This is just a roll of it but there are professional places that have a better material that people put on new cars to protect from rock chips. The pros put it on compound curves so it sounds exactly like what you want.

I have E-Coat on my new Victoria restoration. It is a dull finish and it is durable.

Yes, I have a Fine Point Car and it is a trailer queen. BUT originally I put Rhino Bed Liner on, and that stuff is tough and protective. BUT, when I decided to go the Fine Point Route, we had the Soda Blaster take off the Rhino, ,WOW, what a job...The soda blaster had to go to over 3,000 PSI and it took almost 60 hours to do the 4 fenders and he had to use over one (1) ton of soda...We had to build gigs and bolt the fenders to the gigs...If you only want a driver, use Rhino Just be careful not to get it where you don't it...Jay

Wurth SKS (Now stoneguard aqua?) is awesome for this.

It's also water based, so cleans up easily, but once it's on there, it stays there.

It's like the stuff the underside of modern german cars are covered in.

3-M makes a product called Rocker Schultz (spelling) in a clear version I think. It is like the textured coating along the bottom of fenders, doors, rocker panels, of todays cars. I have never used the clear but I did use the regular version on a customers 1937 Terraplane. We use it on the bottom of the floor pan and fenders. I finished the car in 1996 and it still looks as good today and when it was finished, no chips and it is no trailer queen for sure.

If you painted the undersides of your fenders with PPG, I assume a catalyzed urethane such as Concept, I wouldn't coat anything over it. That paint is tough as nails. After time, if you don't like the way they look, you can color sand them and re-shoot.

Drive it and don't worry about it, unless you are going for high point judging against the "trailer queens" !
