1942 Mercury rebuild vlog

I am doing a little vlog on rebuilding the new engine for my RPU, I hope it wont all end in tears, I am trying as hard as I can to make this work.

It looks like a great start. You have some great parts to go in it as well. I love all that old ex military stuff.

Yes the military parts are all ways safe from moisture in the cosmline.



I am going to go to the smaller clutch pressure plate I have decided, flywheel will need to be re drilled and ground, pressure plate needs to be rebuilt, and because of the gearbox I am using I need to fit a pilot bush as I cant get the right bearing

I am running an 11'' at the moment and clutch is very heavy and pushing hard on the peddle causes the gearbox mount to compress witch in turn causes clutch chatter, if I lock up the gearbox rear mount the chatter gets much less.

Been cleaning the inside of the sump for hours, it’s slow going, riveted on the dipstick tube boss,

The brass boss for dipstick tube is unusual; normally made of die cast. Only the English, to the best of my knowledge, used brass there; they ensured absolutely no leaks by, not only riveting, but also soldering it on.

I think that brass dipstick boss was made for that guy JobLot in the USA, it’s really solid, I guess they soldered them “to be sure to be sure” and then they went off on a tangent on the rest of the engine

Ok after talking to a lot of people I have decided to use the 11” pressure plate, I am sending it off to be rebuilt with lighter springs, I had to remove the ring gear as it’s very worn

I\m not sure why, but I like the stock 91.2 pressur plate. Light but strong for street use.

Didn't talk to me! No way I would recommend the 11 inch clutch and pressure plate! It somewhat depends on what you are wanting to do with it when finished. If it is pulling tree stumps or hauling 30 foot logs, I guess the 11 inch is the way to go. If you are wanting to drive it and have any kind of high performance, it would be a very poor choice IMO.

Asked. Ring gear place if they could replace it and they sed $250 + 15% tax nzd, I got a NOS ring gear and put it on my self for $90.

I have taken apart a few oil pumps and none of them had a gasket between the end plate and body but the re build kit came with a gasket, also I have never seen a pick up with this little tube? Problem with it is cleaning the inside, It was rusty and I have it a soak in rust stripper.

The pickup in the Crusty flatty had that tube. It was a military 99 engine. The replacement filter element had to be stretched and reshaped to clear that little pickup tube. I show it in one of my videos. (not very well).

The pump and pickup (now I think about it having watched the video) came from a UK 21stud truck motor.

That looks just like the pickup I have, I have stacks of other ones I will use I think as the one with the tube is too rusty

I swapped some smoke for this 8ba crank and rods, 8ba stuff in Newzealand is very hard to come by and very expensive. Not sure if I will use it in this build.

I understand the 8ba crank cam gear has the teeth angled the other direction?

You can swap the crank gear if needed.

Got a call from the mechine shop, block passed magnaflux and it has been bored and pressure tested and all is well, crank has been ground to.

It’s got the rods you gave me in it, just need to find a gearbox front seal, get the oil lines made and it can go in

Got it into my car with a fork lift but then getting it out at home was hard, had to Jack the back of the car up and put blocks of wood under the engine hoist, and it took like 2 hours.

Installed the engine and ran it for an hour and it has crapped out, oil filter if full of big end metal, I am really disappointed

Oh dear, I'm really sorry to hear that.

You mentioned installing a full flow oil filter in the video. Any chance that filter starved the front and center mains of oil pressure? If oil pressure gauge sender is before the filter instead of after, you would not get an indication of the problem.

I used a pressure primer to prime the oiling system, the oil filter fittings and line is 3/8”

It’s got copper lead big end bearings witch is what is showing up in the oil

Had same happen with a new engine build it seized. Turned out to be the plug was fitted for a full flow oil filter, nil oil filter fitted hence it seized.
The engine machinists made every thing good. Included 2 new liners, c/shaft polished, new main bearings, new bottom end brgs, new rings.
Initial agrement was I front for parts and they would do all machining.
When I went to pick it up 2 weeks ago with money in my pocket.
To my surprise nil cost to me. They sttod by their work, corrected it and its now in engine stand having been through 3 heat cycles for retorqing.
This has restored my faith in people!
Hope you can have similar assistance and help from machinist as this is gut wrenching when shit like this happens. Hang in there!

It didn’t do anything, it runs well, it just got lots of bearing in the oil, guy rang me and sed he wants to take a look inside.

Engine is out and in it’s cradle in the boot of my car, I will make the 2 hour drive to the shop tomorrow morning

It’s all ok, engine has had all the caps off and bearings out and he sed it’s good and nothing is wrong, no particals in the sump to, nothing to worry about, we are both glad we pulled it apart.

Went for a good drive a week ago and it’s going really well, I got Lucas 15w40 oil witch it seems to like, car passed it’s 6 month road worry test, I don’t get out of the car stinking like fumes like the last motor, weather is way too bad at the moment to drive.
