Default Locked up engine update

My last post on thing was back in November. Finnaly got the car up on lift
as I thought starter really jammed had to destroy the dust cover then we
got the bendex to move a little. I removed the starter housing so with hand on armature and with channel lock I got the armature and bendex out, sure enought the ring gear. we managed to punch ring gear back to its shoulder.
Using a small level I marked the front pulley 9-3 12-6'o clock. We migged
a mig dot 9-3 12 & 6 o'clock. Put all back together pushed the button 1/2
turn running but with donk donk and worse with the clutch in more like
cluck cluck. Take starter out again I figure a weld dot may be striking the
block, nope no shinney marks. Oh I did find armature shaft was bent .120 thou
so that got tweeked and got .003 runout, good enought back together same
ole noise & worse with clutch. Can't be crank end play this is all new with
.004 end play. Going back, went for milk, shut her off (no noises no nothing)
come out and thats all she wrote. ? is. how in hell does a ring gear take a ride
while at idle walk out and jam against the block ?? This is a temporary eng.
while the origional got bored. Next I will post 59A rod bearings..sam

Forgive me, bigjob, I find it hard to follow your posts.

Are you saying the ring gear walked off the flywheel after being knocked back and migged in 4 places? Migging steel to cast iron is probably not ideal, did the 4 welds break? It looks like you might need to use a better flywheel and ring gear combo.

Mart.

Big Job

X2 What Mart stated.
It's hard to figure out what happened when you said that the ring gear took a ride after putting it back on .

What happened? How did you fix the problem?

If the ring gear came loose on the flywheel, it either wasn't installed properly, or the flywheel was damaged. Sometimes if the ring gear cools before it is in place, it will work loose. Be sure the ring gear is facing the correct direction. I have seen more than one installed wrong. Getting the ring gear hot enough to fall into place can be tricky, and you don't get a second change if not fully heated.
