Default Steel rivets for brake lining?

I ordered some brake lining for a set of '34 front brakes to put on my Model A. They came supplied with steel rivets instead of brass. Has anyone used steel rivets for their brakes? Seems to me as soon as I get near the rivets, they are going to tear up my drums. I called the vendor and was told they all come with steel rivets. I even managed to crack one of the linings trying to set the rivets. These came from one of the major vendors in the NY area.
I have ordered brass rivets from another vendor and am going to grind off the steel rivets and replace them with brass.
