Looks like a '66.

I'm surpised there weren't burned valves in the Bug, pulling something behind it. I could hardly get my 65 VW into Eastern Oregon from Portland without burning a valve.

Looks older than 66 but hard to tell and that thing is a rag top not a sun roof. I would love to have that thing in that shape right now.

It looks like a much earlier bug than a 65.Wolfsburg crest on the hood, fabric sunroof, small signal lights positioned close to the body, small window doors,I'm thinking 59-62.A look at the rear would tell more.

The bug is a '62, and the picture was taken in that year when it was brand new.
It is a sunroof. Of course, if you look at the model A you will note that it is also
a sunroof, lol. I put the new roof on the Ford shortly after this picture was taken.
I had a '59 bug that I sold at auction ln 2010 at Mecum/Kissimmee, Fl.

I had a twin to that 62 I bought in 72.Ruby red, full length sunroof, two tone wheels,WW tires,40 HP with a stale air heating system, mid 62 MFG date.I got it with the engine in pieces in the back seat. The main reason I bought it was that I had the A,(still have it) and I wanted a car with heat.To me,at 16,an airtight car meant it had heat.If the wind didn't blow through it I was good. That full length sunroof was fun.I was at a stop sign one night,on the other side of the street there was a cop getting into his car.(we didn't have cruisers)His mouth dropped open and he dropped the coffee he had just gotten.Turns out the girl in the back seat had stood up on the seat, half out the sunroof, with no top.I missed the whole thing except the cops reaction. There were three girls in the car,and that one was the one least likely to do something like that.

Yeah, gotta love those sunroofs! Mine was also "Ruby Red." My best/worst sunroof story was that the wiper fuse blew when I pulled my A through Los Angeles on the Hollywood Freeway (US 101) The driving rain was so bad that I could see nothing coming or going and had to pop the roof and stand up to peer over the "A" so I could see to move over to the far right lane. I then pulled under an overpass until the rain stopped.

Mine was a 63, Ruby Red, but alas, no sun roof -- and I lived in Phoenix at the time.

I still have my 56 VW sedan, Strato Silver along with 2 Model A's and a Model A doodle-bug. VWs and Model A's get along well. I get more heat out of the A's than the VW.

Ahhh, yes, those famous heaters in the early bugs. You could crank the knob wide open before you could feel the heat----and then only if you were driving at highway speeds. The bug was a terrible car in the winter at a drive-in----unless you were with your sweety.
