Default Valves

I'm replacing my valves and need to grind the seats. 45 degree is the angle but what is the procedure angles to narrow the seats before lapping? Do I have to install the split guides in to use arbor? Any help would be helpfull.

Well, the interference angle should be 44 degrees, and you need the special mandrel that takes the place of the guides during the stoning process. The downside to using the two-piece guide is getting concentricity on the seat.

Hi Leatherback
Are you sure the valve seat angle is 45 deg. I think the stock valve might be 30 degrees. I'm not sure- just double check. Because you are using a split valve guide it sounds like you are using all stock or repro parts. A lot of cars , including mine-went to one piece guides and use a 45 Deg valve seat. Both ways work well.

I use a 30 degree and a 60 degree to narrow and center the seats!

I thought I would use a new split guide cut an old spring to clear lifter and hold pressure with spring compressor and do one at a time with arbor available. I ordered new parts from Snyder. Engine in car .Lucky it already has adjustable lifters.Had 2 burned exhaust valves and all the rest were like razor blades. Probably what caused them to burn. When time comes to pull engine I will install harden seats. Engine still runs good with no smoke or blow and cylinders are tight. What are thoughts on using the split guide for holding arbor as guide?

The best way I have found is use the guide you are using for that valve. Mark it so you can put it back just like it was when you ground the valves. Never mix up the valve guide halves. The split guides that I have used are not that well made.
