Default Mart's Crusty Flatty Teardown Pt4. Pistons. Bust 'em out!

Having successfully got the valves and the crank out, in this episode I turn my attention to the pistons. I show them I mean business with a steel bar and a big hammer.

See how it went:

You have to be careful doing that, a friend of mine was working on one and knocked a 3 inch hole through one of the cylinders. Then he gave me the block for parts

I’ve found that a cut down base ball bat blank is the perfect size for knocking pistons out of a block

That's why I was being very careful. I knocked a hole in the bore of a 59A motor. Luckily I was only stripping it to use as a mock up motor. It was already scrap due to extensive pan rail cracking.

I never did get those pistons out.

I have a roll of 2" wide lead sheet. Picture the 2" strip of lead about 1/8" thick rolled up like a cinnamon roll. About 3" in diameter. This conforms to the piston's crown and gives some inertia when beaten upon. I always save the piston.... and the bore.

That’s an interesting interesting method GB. I’ve got some lead sheeting that I was going to melt down for bullets, maybe I’ll give that method a try.

I had a neighbor who was building an 86' sailboat just above me on Mt. Pickett. That's about 700' above sea level. He always collected lead from all sources for ballast. When he died in his mid 90's his son brought that roll of lead by, along with some other gems. I have always loved how it spreads the blow across the crown of the piston.

Yeah, GB, if the bores were better and the pistons not already damaged I would have tried to be a bit more sympathetic. The lead roll sounds like a good idea.

Now I see what I have to look forward to, didn't know about knocking off the top of the Pistons. I once had a Honda 90cc that was very stuck, I ended up buying a small punch and busted up the piston from the top, when done the rings were still stuck to the cylinder walls. It looked like someone had welded the rings to the bore.

I enjoyed the video on the pistons.... Glad I never bought a stuck engine. Lots of parts to replace. I guess even if an engine is ancient at least if it turns, you will have less problems.
