I sense there could be a debate judging from posts I've seen that touch on this subject, so here's a couple questions to kick it off:
1. How many run whitewalls on their Model As?
2. Were factory whitewalls ever available on early Fords (A,B, V8)? If so, when?

No factory Whitewalls until 1934. That is why some folks don't like them on A's. In my opinion they were available during that time and well before, so if folks like them, then they are still "period correct". But to each their own, on their own cars. Not for fine point judging,

1) The trend is not a prevalent now as it was in the 60's & 70's however old habits die young. One observation that I have noticed is it seems the elderly are more likely to run whitewalls than the younger generation. Naturally there are exceptions to that mindset but many are now more versed in what is correct.

2) Whitewalls were not available as a OEM installed item on the Model-A. I cannot answer towards Ford's latter years but I would suspect it would have been post-depression on the majority but offered in 34 or 35. One thing to point out is most, -if not all whitewall tires that were available during the Model-A era were actually whitewalled on both sides, ...not just on one side like we find on today's 19 & 21 inch tires.

My '30 coupe currently has blackwalls. Got it that way from my friend, who was 82 when he died three yrs ago. It has less to do with taste than frugality. It will need new tires in the spring and I will probably get blackwalls to keep it original. I'm 64. (My '41 Hudson now has whitewalls, incidentally, because I like the way it looks with them).

My '30 Town Sedan, '30 CCPU, and '42 Tudor have whitewalls. The Town Sedan and Tudor came that way and look nice. The CCPU is finished as a Fire Chief's car and I reasoned during the restoration that being the Chief's car would be blinged out a bit. All the rest have blackwalls.

Have them on my 31 Tudor Deluxe. True about factory not offering them, but a lot of authorized stuff was sold by the dealer, if the buyer wished to pay for them. That's the problem. Most folks that bought a Ford were on a budget, and WW tires were an extravagance. The economy began to stabilize by '35 so there became more of a market for those little extras. I'm 64. I have 'em on a stepdown Hudson & a 50 Cadillac.as well. Frankly, I love the look, but I think that I spend more time cleaning the WWs than with any thing else for maintenance. Curious, the folks at the Hudson Forum just asked a similar question regarding the stepdown cars (48-54). Nine out of 10 preferred WWs.

All the cars I had as a youth had whitewalls. If they didn't, we either painted them on or got those fake ones that just fit under the rim. So, since I grew up with them I have them on my '29 roadster. I like them and think they make the car look a little sportier. Or, maybe it's just a bow to the past. I think Brent is right, though, young folks don't have them and don't want them. But isn't that partly because they've never, or hardly ever, seen a late model car, the kind they would buy, with them?

White or more like gray side walls were available before that in the Model T era. The tire casing were white/gray natural rubber and a black cap with carbon added was put on the casing to make the tire longer lasting.

I think that black walls look more original on a model A and I prefer them. This is the only model A with original wheels that I've ever had with whitewalls. I got a good deal on these. I was going to paint over the whitewalls and turn the black side out. Deb said keep them white and paint the wheels red and that is what i did. I think that whitewalls look best with darker colored wheels. I'm 66 soon to be 67 . In the sixties,if my newer cars didn't have whitewalls, I either used porta walls or white shoe polish to make them white. By 1971 it had to be blackwalls and either chrome or aluminum wheels on the modern cars

Might be wise, (just in case one may want to consider what are other family member's preferences), to ask one's wife, girl friend, children, or more mature grandchildren for an opinion on whether they prefer whitewalls & painted wheels in a color, as opposed to black-walls with black painted wheels.

Appears females & the younger group usually tend to keep up more with what the general public will think is more appropriate in any era.

In asking several younger people & females recently for comparison while looking at Model A's in Model A magazines, appears most like whitewalls with straw colored wheels.

Found it quite humorous that most thought that black walls & black wheels made the owner look like a sort of very old scrooge type of stingy, cheap Paw-Paw or Maw-Maw Model A owner -- my generation might have described such a person as a "too old to cut the mustard" old grouch type of person.

However, in my sincere opinion, have sincere respect for the wishes of other Model A owners -- whether thinking originality, numbers of points, or whatever, again, each to his own, & do what makes one content -- life is so short.

Once upon a time Denman made a double whitewall (back in the 1960's and perhaps early '70's), but it is my understanding that they have long since ceased to be involved in producing either blackwall or whitewall tires. Does anyone know of a manufacturer who may be producing these?

I have whitewalls on my '30 Deluxe Coupe, but I think I'll change to blackwalls when I need to buy new tires. Although my car looks good in whites, I feel that the car should have blackwalls, considering the year. That's just my humble opinion.

They do draw your eyes away from the rest of the vehicle. For me it is part of the package, I like 'em, I put them on my Motorcycles as well, but I do understand your point completely.

I have 'double' white sidewall tyres on our 1932 Ford 3 window coupe, they were a authorised 1932 Accessories, and factory installed 'special equipment'.
They are not hard to keep clean, and I think they make the car standout more.

When I bought my restored Town Sedan about 6 years ago, it came with blackwalls on it, and I seriously considered changing them to whitewalls at the time. But a fellow Model A club member talked me out of it, saying to keep it original looking. I just bought new tires, and went to blackwall Goodyears. I am happy with my decision, but also feel that many Model A's certainly look nice with whitewalls, so to each, his own.............I am 68.

I admire the look of fat whitewalls on Packards, LaSalles, Cords, & Duesenbergs, because that's how they came. However, Model A's never came from Henry that way, and with the skinnier tires, the whitewalls really look out of place. Love my black Lesters....

71 years old. Been driving Ford Model A's (I've had about 15 of them) for over 50 years. All except one ('31 Dlx Roadster) had black walls. The '31 Roadster had them because they looked especially good on the six 16" K-H wheels, and they did come with the car when I bought it in 1965.
A big 'fashion sense' is how the wheel/tire/black fender/ body color all comes together. Most all Model A's came with black wheels (later exceptions on some of the '31 models). A black tire, black wheel and black fenders - make for a rather dull (even though 'factory correct') appearance. However, with a colored (non black) wheel (dealers charged about $5 for color in 1928-'31) to break up the black on black on black drolness, the black-wall tires don't look bad. The absolute best combination if one were to wear white-wall tires would be on black wheels, to help 'sport' up the eye appeal.
I do have a set of the correct double-sided white-wall tires (n.o.s.from a special run in 1965) for the 21" wheels on my '28 Phaeton. However, they are not mounted because when I restored the car (Duchess Blue, with French Grey pin stripe) in 1979, I opted to paint all six of my wheels the optional ($5 extra from the dealer) French Grey. I felt that the white-wall tires would detract from the beauty of the grey wheels. So I have had original black-wall Firestone (cross and tepee tread design) tires on the car since that time. I also had another set of Black wheels with black tires to help the Blue Ribbon judges feel more 'comfortable'.
My '31 Dlx Coupe (Ford Maroon, Red Stripe) , on the other hand has Black 19" Kelsey-Hayes wheels with single sided White-wall Firestone tires. I think it looks great - much better looking than black tires on black wheels. I have another set of wheels for this car - 18" Kelsey-Hayes - which I will be painting Red, to match the pinstripe color on the car. With the red wheels, if I were to follow my general rule-of-thumb, you would think that I would put on black-wall tires. However, because the 18" wheels have a smaller diameter, and the hub-to-rim spoke distance is significantly shorter than a stock 19" A wheel, and the large V-8 style center hub, with it's large 8" chrome hubcap - makes me feel I can 'get away' with having both a colored (red) wheel AND a sporty white-wall tire. What makes it even more enticing to me is that I can get (they are currently being made) the correct double-sided white-wall tires for the 18" rims.
So it all boils down to - what YOU like is what is correct ! However I do think that for some, it is important - or at least of some interest - to know what was factory 'correct', what was dealer 'correct', and what was 1930 owner 'correct'. Then one can better assess how one 'fits' into the scheme of 'All Things Ford". Which gets us back to - What YOU like is correct.

I am a relatively new Model A owner, although I own a bunch 'a old cars, a Model T included, but the very first change I made to my car is take the white wall tires off, paint 'em black, and mount 'em inward. Now I don't look like a 76-year-old anymore when driving my car!






In my not so humble opinion, a Model A with white walls symbolizes a pretty boy, wearing a bow-tie and smelling the flowers, whereas a Model A with black wall tires symbolizes somebody like Steve McQueen.

I like white wall tires on certain cars, but absolutely not on any Model T or Model A.

When I was younger all my Model A's had white wall tires. I thought that the white wall spare on the back might be a safety factor when driving at night with one tail light. Now all of my Model A's have black wall tires because of tire prices.

Nothing worse than "yellow wall" tires on yellow wheels, as on my A's back in the 80's. Remember the Allstate white walls that would turn back yellow before they were dry no mater how much Bleche-Wite you put on them?

I don't think either makes a car look bad. My grandpa always used whitewalls on his A's. They looked good. When I purchased new tires, I went with blackwalls for the sole reason that it was a lot cheaper ($75 per tire) with the brand tire I was buying. I'd go back to white walls if I got a good deal on some tires.

I just turned 69 tuesday. When I acquiired my tudor, the white walls (dual sidemounts) were already on there from the late 80's. Tires still good so haven't changed (no money) over yet to 16" and blackwalls. I do however like WW's on some A's more than others, I also thnk they look good on mine. JMO

I happen to think a lot of cars look good with white walls, including some of the A's. As a personal choice, however, I prefer black walls on my 1930 Town Sedan..... Just looks more authentic to me, and I also doubt many Model A's were equiped with white walls back in the '30's...... Money was way too tight, and just owning a car in the Model A class had to be a challenge for most. Period photos seem to bear this out. I am 69.

Talking with my dad years ago he said that during the depression tires were of such poor quality that they were lucky to get a few months out of some tires. If they traveled any distance they would they would carry two or three extra tires. So whatever Henry put on the car was pretty short lived. I think most people were just happy to have tires with air in them. Maybe it would be appropriate to have different style tires on each wheel.

There were whitewalls on my '30 Dlx Coupe when I bought it 14 years ago. When I replace the tires, they'll be blackwalls. I feel that black tires more correctly represent what the car looked like when it was new. That's my opinion and I'm 76.

Being new to this. I have bought so many new parts or had original parts redone and the cost is killing me. There is one real whitewall on the car and the rest were painted to look like a white wall. So if your car is lighter in color, generally to me whitewalls looks nice/right (historical correctness aside). I for one like my Black A, all in black...

I'm a 1942 model.
1955: First car was a Model A with blackwalls
1956 Second car was a Model A with used blackwall radials from my neighbors Porsche.
1958 First car that I could legally drive: blackwalls, then whitewalls when I could afford them
1958-1962: All whitewalls.
62-mid 70's: Blackwalls on all hot rods and sports cars. WW on modern cars
late seventies to present: All blackwalls
Seems like the mid fifties to mid seventies whitewalls were required to be really cool. The coolest were the Vouges sp? with the checkered whitewalls and the V painted red. Never could afford those. I remember this was and remains a hot topic from the mid fifties to the present. None of this is the final word, only another old man's rambling about how it was in my day and my neighborhood.
PS I think whoever set up the spell checker likes whitewalls because it always changes blackwalls to blackballs. I think blackballs are a condition you get from bouncing down the freeway on ridiculous big wheels with little thin tires. ;<)

Well lets talk price...to hell with aesthetics. Just got my new Brattons catalog. No complaints as I understand all the issues with bringing a product to market. BUT! it will be a cold day before I shell out over $200 per tire for whitwalls. I have them now but will replace the BW.

Women are not known for admitting their age so all I'll say is I'm somewhere between 72 and 74. I can relate to JBill and the cheap whitewalls of white rubber paint or the ones that fit under the rim. I felt soooooooooo cool in my 51 Stude convertible and white walls. At 50 mph or 50 feet they looked ligit. It's hard not to relive my youth thru my Model A with WW's. My fleet is split between BW and WW. Most I purchased already had the WW's..Maybe that's why I bought the car, for the WW tires. :

My dad will be turning 95 this year. He has told me that the Model A back in the 30s was a cheap car and he can't recall seeing one with whitewalls. I don't like them myself as IMHO they look like lipstick on a pig. Don't like straw colored wheels either and prefer black. I am painting over them on my 29 pickup with black tire paint. But to each his own.

We have ran black walls on our Model A Fords for about 40 years because I could not afford the extra price of the whitewalls. We are finally financially secure and now we have white walls and I like them best. They do look sharp! I don't like cleaning the whitewalls though. I am 70 years old.

I went looking through old 1930 vintage photos to find white walls. Whether you like them or not, they were certainly not a common sight in the 1930's. I think so many Model A Fords have white walls because when they were first restored in the 1950s and 60s white walls were common and a big deal.

That may we very the reason others don't have white walls, because of the cost difference. I am sure many would like them but they just can't afford them. Wayne

I think they look good with some color schemes as Ray64 points out. If you're not into judging, go with what looks good to you. My AA truck obviously has black walls, but I might put WW on one of my other As. BTW, it seems that I may be the oldest goat to reply so far at 74. How did I get here?

My car is a Chicle and Copra 1930 Town Sedan and I have whitewalls. For the first 18 years the car had black tires and I was able to buy the whites slightly used at a very good price. The Ford Barner I bought them from had a black coupe with black wheels and wanted to go with black tires. Oh, by the way I'm 66 yrs. old.

Never a question as to the color of the tires. All my cars (Model A and Modern) have blackwalls. Now on the other hand, I keep playing around with wheel colors. I have a full set of Tacoma Cream (or straw, or whatever), a full set of Green (probably too bright to be Apple Green) and 3 black wheels, all 19". And then there's the raft of 16" wheels with the 19" centers 4 are red, two are a yellowish beige.

Now if I can only figure out what I want to be when I grow up, I'll be fine. BTW, I'll be 74 a little later this year. (that's assuming that I get over this springtime allergy attack!)

Ok, just stumbled on this thread, and thought I would put my 2 cents in. I recently bought my first (since dads 28AR way back in 50's). it is a 29 Tudor, with excellent almost new blackwall tires on black wheels. The body is painted what I assume (and we all know what happens when we assume). is andalisite blue, as it looks black indoors, but blue in the sunlight. I bought it on a very cloudy day, and thought it was black until it was delivered on a sunny day.LOL. Anyway, since it is a lot go dark on black on black, on black, I would kinda like to change the color of the wheels to a lighter color. Since it is not and as long as I have it never will be a show car, The wheel color doesn't have to be correct. I just can't figure what would go with the DARK blue. Maybe cream? A light blue? Red? any opinions, or suggestions as to how to see what would look best without painting 2 wheels? OH, by the way I am about to turn 75, and I like both black and whitewalls. My 65 mustang has whitewalls, (it is a show car). but my 64 Ranchero has blackwalls.

I don't see much debate about WW on light trucks. BW is the only way to go, of course . Most trucks, especially pickups, that I see with WW are also laden with accessories.

Oldforder, if you have pin stripes paint your wheels that color. If you don’t have pin stripes, I feel a medium blue would look nice! Paint a piece of metal and then hold it up to your car and see what YOU like :-)

Model A's DID come with whitewall tires, you just had to pay extra for them, that's all.
Most back then did not have the disposable cash to fork out for them

Bought it (my roadster) with WW's and added 16 inch rims, sticking with the whitewalls, was an old 58 at the time, am still running them at young 82, yesterday. Still have both sets and trade off sometimes. 16's a much better ride and don't follow groves in the road so much. Stop much better also.

I know that this a topic with strong sentiments on both sides. But as for white walls, are there any tire manufacturers who currently produce a "double" whitewall. I know that Denman used to produce these back in the 60's and maybe early 70's, but I have not seen new "double white walls" in quite a few years.

Our '31 roadster runs with white walls because we bought it that way and my wife likes them. It is her ride and she gets to decide these things on her car. I just fix things and keep it running for her.

Fitting the cost of things into ones budget is always critical. Not sure the BW vs WW price comparison is accurate. Yes, you can get a Lucas BW for 99, but the do not make a WW.

Firestone, Bridgestone, Lester make both and the price difference is 34 or 40. Still for 4 tires, $160 buys a lot of gasoline to drive the A vs just looking at it.

I need a pair of rear tires, but would like a set (5) Lester WWs. Does the benefit or joy of changing offset the cost difference? That is an individual question to answer.

I will let you know how the Lester’s feel.
