Default Used anti freeze

Hi Barners, I was wondering what you do with your old antifreeze, I live in a small town & can not find anyone who recycles it. I'm trying to be friendly to the enviroment. Your input would be appreciated. ( I have about 20 quarts)
Thank you
Gary.

Gary,
Go to the local auto parts that you do Business with & most likely they will dispose of it for you. If they want to charge you, tell them that that ain't Coustomer friendly !!!!

I call the same department within my city that handles trash pick up and they direct me to a location where it can be disposed of free (well not exactly free, it comes out of the taxes). Any chance you are going to a private recycling company that only wants stuff that can be turned into money versus a government funded center that is intended to protect the environment?

Any automotive service facility ("repair garage") should have the capability. They are required by law to capture everything they drain. They in turn contract with a company like Safety Kleen to pick up on a regular basis.

Back when there weren't any recycling centers, I used to take the bottles and leave them at a local gas station late at night.

I don't do that any more.

Go back and read what Dale Fairfax posted!! Any auto/truck repair shop can properly dispose of the used materials for you unless they are prone to breaking the law.

JWL
Do they have to except all oil & antifreez that they dont create buy doing there changes, then if they have to except all,can they charge for disposal, and for how much $$$
Keep that price high & they don't have to break the law & not except the old product. Keeping that price high makes another reason for people to come to them for there complete service needs.

I don't know if it's standard practice across the U.S. but here in south La. the Firestone stores will accept anti-freeze with no charge and Wal-Mart will take the used oil.

Be careful because some antifreeze tastes good to animals and they will drink it and die. Keep it covered until you can dispose of it.

I live in a small town too. Actualy not to far from you. I take mine to my local auto parts store where I buy new antifreeze and they recycle it for me. Most auto repair shops will take it as well as they have to dispose of it properly as well. I always keep the old jugs just for that purpose.
And yes it will kill family pets as it tastes quite sweet.

It is a 50 mile round trip to get rid of it around here. Parts stores and shops will not take it. Shop owners say, not dained by them, so not their problem. I won't say where most local DIY's do with it, but gauranteed its not the best disposal method.

Thanks for being a responsible citizen. Too many car guys would just dump it in their yard or in the nearest sewer.
