Default Pertronix Coil

Has anyone had any experience mounting a pertronix flame thrower coil in the stock location ( sideways ). They are oil filled and I was always under the impression that this was a no-no .This would be a y-block application ; not that this should should matter . Thanks in advance for any advice .

I mounted mine on the inner fender in the vertical position. I use a long spark plug wire for the coil wire, routed so it doesn't chafe on anything and doesn't contact the exhaust manifold.

I avoid their products. I have heard a few times, over the years, that if their stuff is bad out of the box they won't make good on it. Their standard answer is you didn't read the directions. You hooked it up wrong, and you cooked it.

I generally can find all the ignition sysytems I want by Accell (via Jegs, or Summit).

The main trouble with PERTRONIX that I have noticed is their general lack of tech info or contradicting info throughout their literature, directions are not followed or the wrong system is ordered. Thankfully, most of it is still made here while the others are off-shore.

I've not bought any of their products but the "still made here" may or may not not be true.
At a T-Bird convention a couple years ago the increasing failure rate of their points conversion modules was discussed. The consensus was the failures followed an apparent off-shore move of the manufacturing source. Although I have no facts to back up the assumption.

There is a reason some coils are manufactured off-shore as the one last plant here shut-down. Hard to comply with EPA here as where there are no environmental controls in CHI-COM LAND.

When a vendor buys another established vendor and moves all production off-shore, that is a problem. Once good names have no meaning today.

I have been using two of their units for about four years now. Absolutely no problems. Maybe just lucky or ??? I was using NAPA points and the last set actually came apart with only about an hour on them. No more points for me!!

I sold petronics for years and never had a problem. When I shut down the business, I kept all the units I had in stock to use on my projects. I have a few projects left to complete and several conversions left.

My '55 F100 has a Flame-Thrower III coil mounted horizontally in the original location. I went back and re-read the install instructions and confirmed that they make no mentioned of any preferred orientation.
I also see on the web site that the Igniter III is oil filed. My install is fairly recent, so we'll just wait and see if it leaks. I have no plans to move it.

I had a Pertronix coil mounted horizontal and no problems with it - the module either.

I hunted around for that FAQ on coil orientation and could not find it. Can you post a link to it?

I was going to buy an entire unit for my car, but I couldn't be sure which coil was correct. If there is hazy stuff when ordering, I can imagine what their support is like.

NAPA, almost everything I bought there has had issues or crapped out entirely on me. Ignition switch, brake light switch, solenoid to name a few.

There have been several discussions here and elsewhere describing PERTRONIX. It is good stuff, but their cataloging and TECH sucks leading one to either buy the wrong parts or not describe fully how to install.

IMO only, it is the last game out there. All but coils are manufactured in their CA plant.

As for old ignition, FORD stills makes it (MOTORCRAFT) in their MEXICO plant or you search for NOS..
