32 trans pops out of second gear
I've got all the other major issues sorted out on my Model B 32 truck. The only one left is the trans. I haven't pulled the cover off to look inside yet. The only real issue is it pops out of second gear when I let off the gas. If the engine is under load it'll stay there. I'm no trans expert so I'm looking for ideas. Most likely it needs a complete overhaul anyway but are there any temporary fixes that'll at least get me to the fall so I can overhaul it then giving me summer driving now the the warmer weather is coming.

Believe it or not, the only temporary fix available is to hold on to the lever to keep it in second gear when you back off the throttle.

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
That's what I've been doing. So guess I live with it till I pull it out to rebuild it.

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
The temporary fix was to install a hook on the dash to hold the shifter up in second. Take a look at some old flathead race cars and hot rods. Just about every one had it.

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
I have a fix you may want to try.
remove cover and mic 2nd and 3rd scycro slot,Then fork. If you have lot of play weld back side of fork. .030 to .040 may hold it in. What happing is the 2nd gear is going back and forth on shaft.IT not suppose to move. |

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
I have the later 81A top on my trans, yours is different so...
What I did on mine as a temporary fix was to put a much stronger spring in the detent for 2nd-3rd gear... Works like a charm, cannot tell it's there when shifting... Has not fallen out of second gear once... Karl |

After trying many things over the years. I finally found the only cure. Installed a T5. Worked wonders.

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
I have the same happen with my '34. I just live with it and hold on when decelerating. I do not know transmissions, so my question to Karl Wolf is where is the detent spring located? Is it in the top plate and thus easy to access?
Thanks, Byron

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
The detent spring change works great with the 81A gear shift housing because of the re-design of the plungers and springs for the '38-'39 model year. That housing has access holes on both sides of the housing with separate plungers and springs for the 1st/reverse rail and the 2nd/3rd rail. The '32-'37 housings have but one access hole and a single spring. It is a big project to replace that spring.

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
Countershaft cluster gear end play to sloppy. Worn out bearings allowing too much movement. Worn gears or synchro assembly. A combination of all the above?

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
Kevin,
There is a way to add an additional spring loaded detent plunger to your type of tower. If you are interested email me at [email protected]. I will admit it is a bit involved but it works well. No exterior changes are required. Charlie ny |

Answer to your question- back of the trans lid, runs crosswise, low. Look for the screw slot in the side... Charlie NY seems to have a plan, and I've not looked into the earlier trans lids... Karl |

Re: 32 trans pops out of second gear
Briefly stated, I hope, adding the second detent requires grinding a notch in the
2nd/3rd rail opposite the existing factory notch. An additional shortened plunger fits in this new notch. The threaded plug is counterbored on the inside face almost full depth to accept an additional spring. This idea was shown to me by a veteran Ford mechanic. It takes a bit of, shall we say Kentucky windage, to get just the right spring and decide just how deep the counter bore can go on the plug. Trust me on this...it is great to have some donor parts. I've got a lot of towers out there with this fix. Charlie ny |
