Default 51 F1 column to floor

I've read the threads on the different F1 trans. I'd love to be able to change from column to floor in my 51 F1. How hard of a change would this be? What about driveshaft? Any advice /wisdom would be appreciated.

Rev,
Get yourself a 78 series case and a double detent tower with a 3" fork.
Switch your side shift goodies...driveshaft is the same. The '51 standard trans was
a sideshift except for the heavy duty 3 spd and the lots of fun 4 speeds which
are great for removing stumps. I've it done too many times.

The late AV8 Paul had bought an F1 panel truck that had been converted from column to floor shift. He wanted to convert it back so he could install a Mercury trans with OD. I fixed him up with the column parts he needed to do the job but I don't know if he ever got around to it.

Don't think the driveshaft is the same. Different length + yoke is way different...

If you use a 48-50 F-1 floor shift light duty 3-sp, it uses the exact same driveshaft as the column shift LD 3-sp.

Personal opinion, I've driven both Column and Floor shift F-1's and prefer the column. The floor shift isn't like a Hurst shifter, you're not going to be banging gears like a Mustang. It has about a yard between gates by the time you get to the end of that long shifter.

I have a floor shift in my F1 and a column in my Tudor and while I like both of them I have to admit when I have three people in my truck I wish I had a column shift.

OOPS. Me bad...I assumed he was going to a 4-speed and not the HD 3-speed. There is definitely a difference between 4 speed driveshaft (and yoke) and standard three speed. Not sure why you would go to the HD three vs standard three or fairly common 4-speed. Next time I'll read the post more closely. g

I don't think he's considering using the HD 3-sp, they are pretty hard to find anyway. They do use a completely different DS, with a slipjoint in the middle instead of a sliding yoke (very similar to the 4-sp's). The HD 3-sp's are useful if you want to go to an ultra-tall rear axle, because of their wider spread, but for the effort I'd probably go to a T5, even tho it means cutting the crossmember.
