Default Odyssey dry battery

Anybody use an Odyssey battery in their flathead powered rig. Which one?

We don't have rigs, we have Fords, ...And besides, Odyssey doesn't make 6 volt batteries.

I just sawed the xtra part off to make a 6V agm battery --I started with a big one from a Mercedes ---it had a little fire that only burned one end --works good and was cheap ---the last battery I bought was an Optima --that lasted 16 years

I would give you an answer of "yes" but it is a 12v and apparently doesn't qualify to be discussed here.

Wow tough crowd! Running a PC 680 Odyssey in my roadster with 21 stud Flathead. Yes 12 volt. Had it for over a year and a half. It is under the seat. and works just great. See it on the HAMB. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=648387

I refer to my boat, my airplane and my 32 as a rig. And yes it is a flathead and it will be 12 volt.

Also I refer to my saddle as a rig. Sorry bout that

None of the above 4 rigs are very fancy
If a 12 volt is not acceptable then I hope nobody uses argon or co2 in their welding process.

An answer to my first post would be appreciated. Is Tuesday nights on this forum always this tough.

I in fact have a pc 680 odyssey running in my 276 flathead. I have been advised by manufacturers to not run stereos or accessories without engine running as the battery is not a high reserve amp battery. Also told to run with an alternator.

Tim, I didn't mean to sound tough, sorry! In fact I anxiously looked up their website to see if they did have a 6v, as the Optima no longer fits inside a 2LF script battey shell.

My experience with Odyssey batteries----I have 3 of them in a fishing boat. I have never had batteries with such Deep Cycle reserve capacity and such quick recharge rates. The power and self recovery is amazing. The only downside is that Odyssey instructed charging should be done with one of their expensive battery chargers.

I also use the PC 680 Its in a non barn friendly car with a sbc.Been in the car 5 years no issues.Left the key on and ran the battery dead,I didn't have the correct charger to charge it with as per the instruction.I used a regular charger and it worked just fine.I was skeptical at first but they work good

I use two Odyssee 12-volt batteries in my battery cart to start the helicopters. It's set up to syphon 12-volt or a full 24-volts depending on the system I'm starting. The cart originally had four 6-volt batteries but the two Odyssees work just as good. The batteries are at least 7 or 8 years old now. They still work OK but I've noticed they are starting to degrade somewhat. These batteries are kind of expensive to run in a car. In 8-years I can purchase 2 regular lead acid batteries for the same price. It's a good idea to use a tender on any of the high dollar sealed batteries unless you drive them every day.

I have a PC680 in my 40 Ford pick up (SBC 12V) for 2 years and I think it's the best set for a limited space. With over sized cables it's it acts like full size battery.

I use one in my 32 Ford with a 290 cube flathead. The battery is located under the rear seat. To me, it's the best battery out there. I run an alternator driven off the driveshaft pinion yoke. I also use a battery tender on it. It's GREAT. I don't agree that they are expensive at all. I paid $130.00 delivered to my door. Plus, it only weighs 11 lbs

Best battery I have ever had was a Mercedes OEM made by Johnson Controls that lasted 10 years.
Johnson makes the Bosch Platinum AGM series that PepBoys sells and it has a 4 year free replacement and reasonably priced. Twenty % off internet code right now as well.

I have heard that Odyssey is very much preferred by the off road crowd and
have seen on other Forums that a Sears Platinum series is an Odyssey battery.

8 years and no problems. Even sat for 1 year still operated perfectly.

Thanks all. A 680 is what I will probably use.

A barner posted what I think is the answer for all but the most decerning, that is a modern NAPA 6V with the decal kit available on EBay. Looks very "retro" and works great. g

If you want a cheap dry battery buy one of the jump starters at Harbor freight and take it apart and there is a cheap 12 volt dry battery inside.

I am using a 12V Braille brand dry cell battery mounted under the seat. It takes up less space and works ok. I have charged it with my 40 year old charger and that works fine. I also am running an original generator and a switched electric fan on the radiator. As a test to see how the generator handled the load at night I had the lights, stereo and electric fan (although it was not needed ) on driving down the freeway. The stock voltage gauge showed in the yellow. Without the fan on it was in the green. Works for me.
