Just picked up a bare 78 case with 81A-7222 top. Case looks to be in good shape. Smooth thrust surfaces, good threads, etc. I plan to put the later gear set in this case for future use in my '37 but for now I plan to rebuild top. I need several parts and the purpose of this thread is to find out how many sources are out there that still have NOS parts available. I'd rather use good used parts than off-shore stuff. I have to replace both fork shafts, detent balls and springs, tower cap and other various small parts that may be OK foreign sourced. Also need a source for 99A7710 "swan" shift lever. All help is appreciated.

Also there is a vendor on Ebay called 'Plainjane' he makes indent kits that work very well. Some of his other stuff leaves a lot to be desired.

Balls are at your hardware store and also the springs, but you may want to cut them down slightly. The split pins for reattaching the forks are also there. If not, then Mac VanPelt has everything you need may also have the shift lever.

Plainjane is actually Hot Rod John (using his wifes handle) from Ohio. He does sell a reproduction '39 swan neck shift lever for lots of $$$'s. You could take most any '36 to '39 pass. car (or pu into early 50's) shift lever and form it to whatever configuration you want. The sources already mention, plus Charlie ny, are all good.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Have checked suggested sources and looks like Van Pelt is best for "one stop shopping". Haven't heard from Chas NY yet. Good idea to re-form commercial stick. Unfortunately the one that came with the top is pitted beyond use. I'm still apprehensive about off-shore parts but, it looks like all NOS is used up or in hiding (don't blame hoarders). Has anyone had experience with reproduction shafts, 81A-7240-41?
Also, it looks like the early transmissions used threaded fasteners to fix shift forks to shafts. Has anyone found that drilling and tapping later units helped prevent slop potential with pins?

The best source for parts (albeit USED parts) are the 1940 thru 48 side shift car transmissions unless you want open drive. The 1942 thru 1950 pickups have the open drive feature. There are still a fair amount of good used side shifters out there. The synchros were used way up into the 50s so there are a lot of those out there. Stacy Brown in Arlington has a lot of NOS parts so you might check with him.
