1935 camshaft gear
I'm putting together my 1935 flathead and it has a fiber pressed on timing gear. I have been following the instruction in H&H rebuild book. They do not discuss the pressed on gear only the bolted on ones. I am at the point in the book of putting on the cam gear but not sure how to line it up to the dot on the crankshaft. I figuring that I will have to remove the caps on the pistons and crankshaft to press it on. Any advise. The fiber timing gear doesn't have any markings on it to line up with anything.

Re: 1935 camshaft gear
There's a scribed line on both the gear and the cam, these are aligned and the gear is pressed on

Re: 1935 camshaft gear
Pressing on those new cam gears can be a very frustrating experience. Ford had a holding fixture to assemble those on the cam. I don't. Does anyone have a good method of pressing these on to achieve alignment of the lines? It usually takes me between 1 and 20 attempts. Took one to the local machine shop and they said to never bring another one to them.

Re: 1935 camshaft gear
I'm a bit surprised to hear about so many problems pressing these timing gears on a cam shaft. I've pressed many of these gears, both fiber and aluminum, off and on these early cams. I've done this with cam in or out of the block on my '35 engines.
If pressing these timing gears on becomes too much of a chore, you could consider changing to the later cam with bolt on timing gear.

...This will be square to the inside of the gear. Make a mark on the top of the cam where you want to line up to. When you put the gear over the top of the cam, you use your pencil marks to line up, then press the gear on. Karl |
