Installing a 50 ford water pump
I have the old water pump off. Thanks to everyone. I am trying to put the new one on. But do not have clearance between the motor mount and bottom of the water pump. There is a jack under the engine. I did not disconnect the exhust. Should I disconnect the exhust? It seem that I can not jack the engine up any more for fear of damage to the pan. Should I take the motor mount off and install the pump and than reinstall the motor mount by taping it in place or what.
Thanks again for all your help. |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
Make sure that everything that inhibits the movement of the front of the engine is disconnected so that it can move. Then buy a repair manual.
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...al&_sacat=6000 Can you first remove the motor mount itself? Then install the pump. Then install the motor mount. Can you post a photo of your situation? It shouldn't be that difficult to change a pump so photos would be helpful. Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-23-2019 at 02:23 PM. |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
I have a Ford repair manual. On pg 84 it tell about installing the pump and attaching the pump to the motor mount. But I need about about maybe a 1/8 inch more clearance between the pump and motor mount. I have the hoses off both motor mounts unbolted. But can not get the clearance to slip the pump on.
Again thanks for the info. |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
Did the engine drop down when you removed it or since? If not is it the wrong pump?

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
Maybe they are different but I did not have much trouble installing the new water pumps on my 52 Merc. I just had a small block of wood between the exhaust manifold and the frame to give enough clearance to put the pumps on. Biggest difficulty was lining up the bolts that go through the motor mounts.

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
There is no reason that the exhaust would mess up your plan. That i can think of. A wood block would help to add surface area force to the pan if you are concerned about damage. Shouldn't have to move the engine up more then a 1/4" or so....

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
If there was room to get the old one out, there’s got to be room to get the new one in. Maybe your jack settled or hopefully the pan didn’t collapse. Do you have a piece of 2 by wood between the pan and jack? I wish you weren’t 3000 thousand miles away I’d gladly give you a hand. I think 19Fordy is right, time for some pictures or maybe contact a EFV8 Club member..... Mark

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
Are you installing new mounts or reusing the old mounts? Are they the correct size,if new?
Did you accidentally switch the mounts from side to side? Is there something on the top of the transmission or bell housing that is hitting the firewall or toe board? Is the oil pan hitting something? There has to be a simple solution. |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
Here's some info. on how to install 1950 Ford engine mounts. It may help solve your problem.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...nt-fit.718520/ Are you sure you are correctly fitting the motor mount to the frame configuration? Inquiring minds want to know what the fitment looks like BEFORE you took it apart. Perhaps someone with the same car can post a photo. Last edited by 19Fordy; 05-24-2019 at 09:11 AM. |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
I did not replace the motor mounts. They are in good condition. Also I did not remove the motor mounts. They are still in place. I put a 2by on top of the jack with a cut out for the drain pulg so that there would not be pressure on the drain plug. Think I'll try to tilt the engine.
Thanks again for your suggestion |

Re: Installing a 50 ford water pump
When I changed the water pumps on a 51 merc I placed the 2 x 4 under the front (not the middle) of the oil pan to gain more tilt at the front of the engine. Can you try that?
