I don't recall ever seeing this shot before . Probably second wave as there is obviously much carnage already .

David,
I recall seeing another photo of this car taken that day from a completely different angle with a PBY burning in the background. It seemed like it was near the end of the runway at Hickam Field. |

No PBY airplanes at Hickam Field. Hickam was an Army Air Forces Airfield. PBY Catalinas are Navy Airplanes. PBY aircraft were based at Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Of the 36 PBY aircraft based at Kaneohe on 7 Dec 41, 33 were destroyed or seriously damaged in the first wave. The three Catalinas that survived were far out at sea on patrol during the attack. There is well known film footage of this base and these 33 PBY airplanes being attacked. See Page 63 Pearl Harbor by Carl Smith |

Early PBY airplanes could not land at Hickam Field because they were not true amphibians yet. They had no landing gear; they were true seaplanes. The early PBYs required "beaching gear" and a "beaching crew" and were then pulled ashore on special ramps at the seaplane base. The amphibian PBY airplanes (that could land on a runway) came later on. TM |

Re: Deuce fordor posing with a jap plane 12/7/41
Thanks for the history lesson, but I am well aware of what a PBy is (was) and what service it served in. A cousin of mine was aboard a minesweeper in Pearl Harbor on the morning of 12/7/41 and my brother flew on both PBYs and Navy B-24s as an aerial photographer immediately after WWII. As you indicated, perhaps the photo I was thinking was at Ford Island NAS.

Re: Deuce fordor posing with a jap plane 12/7/41
David,
It's been several years since I saw the other photo; hence the geography misstep. The wheels and tires in your first photo look like the aftermarket 'jumbos' offered by several tire companies. Unlike '33 and '34 deluxe closed cars, the only '32 deluxe closed car with a chrome-plated windshield frame was the deluxe ( or 3-window) coupe (only offered in the deluxe form, unlike in '33). The horn certainly is a replacement and the car looks to have been repainted given the absence of black fenders. Dave |
