The two tooth Gemmer steering sector was used interchangeably from Feb. 1929 along with the 7 tooth sector to the end of 1929. It was 1 inch shorter than the 30-31 steering column. For 1929, the steering shaft for the two tooth Gemmer sector was 43" long. the 30-31 steering was 44" long.
So yes, the two tooth sector can be used without modification if it is the shorter 29 version.

Was there an early versus a later version of the Gemmer box?

From the JS& RG. The 1929 two tooth Gemmer column was an inch shorter than the 30-31 steering column.

The two tooth Gemmer setup for the '29 used a keyed steering wheel connection on the 43 inch shaft like the 44 inch shaft on the '30-31. The 7 tooth column had a splined steering wheel connection. A very few two tooth splined boxes did exist.
