Default Bad Tube

I bought tires and tubes off craigslist about 6 years ago they were all in plastic bags. When I got home, I stuffed the new tubes inside the new tires and aired the tubes a little so they wouldn't wrinkle and crack. Stored indoors the made in USA tubes still cracked zero miles never mounted I only checked one bag. But will replace them all. The tires were half price tubes included .

Ozone will deteriorate rubber pretty quickly. A source of ozone can be from a refrigerator compressor or electric motor, etc. If you store anything rubber in a confined area (closet) with stuff like that, it will do what is in the photo.

#5 is spot on.
Imported rubber (far from pure rubber) just ages quickly. I’ve seen older tubes wrapped but come out deteriorating

There were some bad tubes sold a few years ago that weren't much good even when they were new. A good quality tube kept out of the light, especially in a tire can easily last 40+ years.

How does a refrigerator compressor generate ozone?
These days most (if not all) refrigerator compressors are sealed units.

Good catch Katy. Poorly worded on my part. My reply was based on a personal experience with damage done by marine refrigeration units running in a closed up yacht for several months. The ozone was generated by the ac fan motors on the units. You are correct that the actual compressor wouldn't have that effect. Thanks for correcting me.

As an interesting side note, apparently the ozone generated by electric cars is so high that it has caught the attention of environmentalists. See, our model As are eco friendly after all!

I have the same tubes in my tires, only 19 inch. They have been in there for years and are still good, if I don't pinch them with the tire iron.

Lightening will also generate ozone. You can smell it after a lightening strike. The electrical spark will split the oxygen molecule (O2) into oxygen atoms (O). The oxygen atoms will quickly combine with an oxygen molecule to form ozone (O3).

That may be a good thing as there was talk about depletion of the ozone layer of the atmosphere.
