Default 39 Engine vs 40 Engine

Why does the 39 block have 3 threaded holes in the block in the area of the oil sending unit and the 40 block has only 2 threaded holes.

Hole in question on the 39 engine is on the right of the boss for the sender.

This is the 40 engine, as you can see no hole to the right of the sender.

that "extra" hole on the right is used for different oil filter types. some military blocks use it, and some guys drill it out and tap threads for that system. you should pull out the horizontal plug on the end, and poke a wire in there to see if the hole is blocked in the center, or open all the way to the extra hole. please tell us your findings for the next chapter in the story!

As you described, I ran a wire into the horizontal hole and he wire is visible through the other 2 holes. So I’m assuming this extra hole had something to do with an add on oil filtering system.

Thanks Dave

The military blocks used oil coolers, filters, etc that required the extra connection.
