John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
So I buy the John Deer corn grease to use in my steering box. I follow the instructions, but low and behold the canister doesn't fit into the grease gun.
Am I crazy or shouldn't the canister (which has openings on both sides( fit in the gun?

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
When I was farming the JD corn head grease I bought came in a can and you poured it into the receptacle on the combine.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
I get mine from the CO-OP and it fits the gun. It is not JD brand.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Ok, as a side question......why is it called "corn grease"? Is it made from corn byproducts?

It's not corn grease its corn head grease. Whatever a corn head is. Some sort of agricultural implement. I'm not a farmer.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
It was/is used the the gear boxes on corn head equipment. It is a low speed gear box similar to the gearing in a steering box.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
In NZ had same problem. The Corn Head Grease cartridge would not fit into my grease gun. I purchased a grease gun from John Deere when I got the grease.
I also got it to go into my steering box. And also for drive shaft universal clam shell. No complaints about having to get another grease gun as now this one is just for the Corn Head Grease and other one with EP Grease for king pins, tie rods etc. Phil NZ. |

This....
https://www.deere.com/en/harvesting/corn-heads/ Refering of course to the big folded up pointy thing in front of the combine. You could easily buy an award winning woody for what the corn head would cost. And this is the critter the grease goes into... .https://www.lankota.com/Replacement-...orn-heads.html

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
I've only ever seen one size of grease cartridges sold here and they all fit any of the grease guns I have. You must have a non standard grease gun if there is such a thing. You always put the end without the metal ring into the gun first down against the plunger of the gun. I don't think it is possible to put the cartridge in backwards.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
I've been using this stuff for years and each cartridge has fit perfectly in a "standard" grease gun

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Ditto here, the cartridge is a standard size and fit my grease gun fine.
You may have tried to put the pop-top end in the gun first. The reinforcing ring at this end will NOT go into the gun. The end that has a plastic or cardboard cap on it, once removed, is the end to insert in the gun. Last edited by glennpm; 02-01-2018 at 10:14 AM. |

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Hmmm...I recently popped a cartridge into my regular grease gun easily - no problem.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
I have two grease guns, one I've had for decades and another I bought a couple of years ago from Harbor Freight specifically to keep the JD corn head grease in.
My Harbor Freight gun took the JD cartridge with no problem. Are you sure you tried to put the capped end and not the pop-top end, into the gun first? |
